Because you want a fun toy. If you have all those other things you won;t gain much (if any) functionality from an ipad, but they are fun!

I received mine as a gift, and I love it. It is a ton of fun, but at the point that you have all those other things you don't NEED one.

I use mine all the time, BUT I am careful with t because if I ever broke it, I would not be able to justify replacing it, since I simply don't need it.

I don't have an iPhone, I have a Droid X, but I do have a laptop, and a Kindle, and a desktop with two monitors:surfweb::surfweb: (and DH has a desktop with three monitors:surfweb::surfweb::surfweb:). And I want an iPad. But I'm with the OP...I need to be convinced. I think DH would even go for it (I think he just wants to borrow it ;)), but it's a big chunk of change with the added fees for another data plan (why can't it be combined with my phone?). We're gadget junkies.

It's not like I really need that iPad, but cmon, somebody tell me why I really want one. What can I see and do that I can't see and do now? Or what could I do more easily? What apps am I missing in the Iworld that I don't have now with my Droid? :confused3

It will replace your laptop, so much smaller and just easier to carry. I also have a laptop, desktop, droid, and an IPAD..I would never give up my IPAD, the others yep...plain and simple I really like it the best for convenience.

Yes you should get one, that's all!

ETA: You should get one because they are awesome. I didn't think there was going to be much of a difference from ipad to ipad 2, but there is and I'm addicted to mine. It goes everywhere with me

Well, if you can get your hands on one and decide you don't want it you can always sell it on Ebay. :-)

What are the big differences? I have an iPad, and it's very hard to justify getting a new one. What did you find to be the major advantages?

Hey Marilee,

I can say all of the same things...and I love all of them.

That being said.....I dont leave home without my ipad.

Answering email and looking at websites on an iphone is serviceable and I've done it. Doing those same things on an ipad is just easier.

We just came home from the February ABD trip. I took my Macbook and my ipad, knowing that I'd work on my laptop and play on the ipad.

I never took the Macbook out of the bag.

Movies on airplanes....books in bed without a light....games in a waiting room...full size emails in the car....Google anywhere with cell service....I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

And the best part of all is that it's all contained in a device about the size of a magazine.

All I can tell you is, that once you have one, you will wonder what you were questioning.

What's so amazing about Apple's coming up with it and selling so many is that it's not something anyone needs.

It doesn't replace our laptops.
It doesn't replace our phones / little MP3 players (Itouch)

It's a fun toy.

So now we travel with a laptop, an ipad, an itouch, and a cell phone. Pretty silly huh? My son loves his and uses it almost every day. I play with it when we are on vacation, and I'm up before everybody else.

My dh and I were JUST talking about this last night! I love, love, love my laptop and it hardly ever leaves my side. I see the Ipad as being more "portable."

Can anyone tell me the differences between the two different ones that are out now?

It really depends on how much Apple formatted media you have. For people like Kevin, who has a large library of Apple movies and music, it's really a no brainer. The screen size is so much nicer to watch a movie on than an iPhone. Also, the Netflix app does a great job (at least it does in Canada, I assume it works just as well in the US).

If you're just starting out and don't have a large Apple library, I'd hold off. Unless you're doing extremely basic things on it (email etc.), I'd say you're good with you're laptop. If it's a huge laptop, I'd suggest a notebook, as the majority of popular sites, or at least the ones I look at regularly, utilize some form of Flash, which Jobs refuses to allow to run on the iOS. You can get a netbook that does an awful lot more than an iPad for a lot less money. Also, I like typing on a real keyboard, but that's just my personal taste.

If you need a reason to "convince you" that you need one then you really dont need one. All the gadgets you have can do what an ipad can and more

I have an iMac, Kindle and iPhone and was going through a similar debate. I also have a work laptop, but avoid doing personal stuff on that, so I don't "count" it.

DH got a first generation iPad for work, but can't install any personal stuff on it and honestly, doesn't use it for much outside of web browsing. His employer was overly optimistic about the apps that they could develop internally and never got them to a point of really being usable. So now, he uses a locked-down iPad once in a while. He doesn't see the value in them at all (mostly b/c it's locked down and it really limits the use), so I had a LOT of convincing to do when I wanted to get one.......

I read a lot and have a few magazine subscriptions, plus I have to keep up with the Wall Street Journal for work. The iPad would definitely work with all of these things! We also have Apple TV, so we have a ton of movies/TV shows that could be transferred to it. Finally, DH said that he still didn't really see the value, but was fine if I wanted to get one. I don't normally have to ask "permission" but for such a pricey item, I wouldn't purchase it without discussing with him.

Well, on Tuesday, I placed an order online with a delivery estimate of April 22nd . Definitely didn't want to wait that long, but the supply seems very limited right now. I had yesterday off of work and stalked an Apple Store and Target in the early hours. I scored exactly the one I wanted (at Target, had an alternative one on reserve at Apple) and am thrilled. I have barely put it down since yesterday. It is incredibly cool. I thought it was just an iTouch on steroids, but it is so much more. While long e-mails aren't ideal, we have a wireless keyboard w/ our iMac and could use that in a pinch. The screen is very nice (even though it's not the retina display of the iPhone 4) and it's just a pleasure to use. While I still prefer my Kindle for long spans of reading, I don't mind reading on the iPad at all.

The one thing that sold my husband.....the March Madness app where he can watch games on the iPad and iPhone. He has it on the iPhone, but it is so much nicer on a big screen.

Sorry for the long post, but I just want to explain that I was in a similar situation and am absolutely THRILLED with it!

I keep jumping on and off the Apple site!!
I really want to get one, but the price point right now is keeping me from taking the plunge :(
Considering that it is a non-necessity, I just can't justify the expense {sigh}

Just an FYI- if you buy the iPad at Target and open a credit card at the same time, you get 15% off all of your purchases that day. It's really a nice savings for pricey items like the iPad. Not that I'm trying to enable you or anything(lol).......... ;)

:thumbsup2 DH and I ordered ours last weekend. He has a computer system with four monitors, a laptop, an Itouch, and Iphone. He was waiting on the second generation. I for one totally under-use my Iphone and I also have an Ipod. I work 1.5 miles from home and DH works even less distance. So it isn't like I need to work on it or anything.

He has lots of Iphone apps--he has to pick and choose which ones he wants to load onto the Iphone becasue he has used up so much space with them and his audiobooks. So for him it was to have a larger screen and more space. I have used half my Iphone space. I think he just felt guilty not getting me one. His arrives 4/16 and I think mine 4/22 or something. Goodbye tax return. :rolleyes1 He uses his laptop at work (fireman) for entertainment purposes to pass the time. Now he has cleaned out the laptop and we will give it to my Mom and Dad. They have never owned a computer. In fact Mom got her first cell phone last week.

So we will see, I think my use for my Ipad will be to surf and watch TV at the same time--which I could do with a laptop....but without the bulky equipment.

Thanks for your input! I only have an Ipod and I really only use it for music...not an Itouch, Iphone, etc.
