Do you ever wonder why people chose certain professions? Every once in a while I wonder what on earth would make someone want to be a proctologist or a colorectal surgeon. Or what about a bridge painter or high rise window washer? What jobs do you wonder about?

I heard a recent interview with Mike Rowe, and he said that's the "dirty job" he would choose if he had to. He said it's peaceful, has the best views, and you have the satisfaction of knowing the job is done - window dirty, window clean.

As for certain types of doctors, I'd guess people choose for money, ease of getting a position in a desired location, and the lowered risk of malpractice suits.

I just got out of the hospital yesterday after 24 days in there! I could not stop thinking about the fact that my surgeon came in to see me every single day...even weekends, even Sundays. In all that time, she never took a day completely off.

I couldn't help but to wonder what motivates somebody to want to enter a career when your entire life is about your job! I know based on my appt times and seeing her in the hospital that she rarely goes home before 6 or even 7pm or later and she's up bright and early the next day to start over again. Who would WANT a life like that? I am grateful, mind you. She is an amazing surgeon and a compassionate human being and her devotion to her job is admirable. But I don't know how she keeps going!

I wonder about the guys who drive around in the DMV trucks and clean up road kill. I guess it must pay pretty well.

My DH wants to paint bridges. No one bothers you all day long, and once you finish one side, it's time to paint the next.

The higher the floor the more money you make. Even so, I wouldn't do it. :rotfl2:

I love your examples BTW. They made me actually open the thread to respond. And no, I have no idea how people choose their careers. I actually have no idea how I chose mine. :rotfl2:

i had one in my sociology class. he said he liked getting to drive around in his truck and listen to music all day. and he kept the windows up with LOTS of air fresheners. ;)

I has to be a passion.

I am a flight attendant, and I am gone 24 hours a day, 15-20 days a month. I love it with PASSION and wouldn't have it any other way.

My DH is a police officer, and he sometimes works 7 days a week, with work itself, court, training, etc.. He is also very passionate about his work.

I've always wondered about the people who work at funeral homes, the ones who embalm people. Nope, couldn't do it.

Ob/gyn - High malpractice, middle of the night hospital runs, and most importantly, who wants to look at women's hoo-ha's all day? Ewww.

Dentist - Mouths = nasty. 'Nuff said.

Plumber - It has got to be the pay, because the crap (literally) they have to clean up/unclog is beyond foul.

Childcare or day care worker. You most love kids to work in the field.

That's kind of funny, I've been toying with the idea of going into mortuary science. I'm taking nursing classes right now, and am finding myself much more interested in the anatomy side of things than the bedside care. If I made the switch though, I'd have to move for schooling, and would wind up making significantly less money.

The one career that always freaks me out: podiatrists. Seriously.. these people willingly work with nasty fungus-y feet all day? Um, no thank you, weirdos.

Agreed. I had a procedure done for a bunion and my podiatrist was such a cute thing, but I did often wonder what made him want to look at feet all day.

one of my very good friends is a podiatrist. i asked her why she picked it, she says she doesn't really know exactly, but she does enjoy it, even though it is beyond disgusting what she has to do.
the fungus , the toenails, omg its totally beyond gross, but anyway, she says she gets satisfaction out of helping people feel better, when they come in with these 3 inch thick fungus nails they can't cut, she literally files them down with a dremel........LOL..........and anyway, she says its gross but she makes them feel better and she likes that.

I have often wondered why in the world anyone would want to be a teacher especially in public schools. It would have to be a passion for anyone to be able to put up with what they do on a daily basis IMO.

There are so many jobs that I wouldn't be able to do that I am happy that others choose to do them.

People laugh when I tell them how I picked my profession (speech pathology)- I chose it through eenie meenie meini mo! :thumbsup2

Seriously, some college applications needed a major (that was changeable) and so on various applications I put down various majors that I was interested in.

I decided to go to Maryland and had already declared my speech major... I liked the classes, went to graduate school, and the rest is history :rotfl2:

My sister's DBF is in podiatry school- yuck!

It's funny that someone mentioned daycare/child care- I work with preschoolers and toddlers for 30 minutes at a time. After that, I happily "return" them. I wouldn't be able to do it all day but 30 minutes is perfect (and sometimes too long). DBF has determined that my job is perfect birth control. :rotfl:

I too often wonder about Urologists & Proctologists.

Another are people who own their own pizza/steak shops and seem to work there all day every day. Maybe in a few years, after they've become successful they hire good managers and can start to ease up on their hours, I don't know. It just seems like a lot of their time is spent on their feet working all day in a hot kitchen churning out the same thing. Not quite the same as a chef who can be more creative with the menu. I guess being their own boss and making hungry people happy is what they like.

Also hairdressers, but that's probably just my aversion to touching other people's hair.

Some of the jobs mentioned, people may not choose them as a career, but as a way to make money if they really need a job, perhaps they don't have many other choices if they don't have the ability/education/opportunity.

There are many jobs where I am just thankful that someone else actually wants to or is at least willing to do it so that I don't have to. Childcare workers. Retail employees in certain stores such as mattress places that seem like it would be completely boring. Construction workers on the highways or other dangerous situations. Truck drivers. Plumbers. People in food service. Any kind of sales jobs. And even LOTS of jobs in my own field of nursing.
