Are you booking "Basic Economy" or trying to book a "preferred seat"? I just did a sample booking for JFK>LAX for a random week in December, selected their "Main Cabin" (whatever it's called now), and there were plenty of seats for no charge.

Delta doesn't charge to pick your seat. There are different seating categories though.

Depending on the seat there may be a charge. Do they charge if a Basic Economy fare wants to select a seat?

Ya, well its a $90 charge to go from Basic to Main. With the Main cabin upgrade, you can pick your seat. But that's really nothing after I was looking at ticket pricing for my daughter's trip to Japan. Its over a $300 upcharge to go to the Main cabin, "to pick your seat".

There are some more benefits to having a main cabin seat. Maybe you don't care about them, but they are there.

I mean, if seat selection is the only benefit you would value, the $90 charge is a STEAL compared to the $300 to upgrade!
