Why is the search function always disabled?

I realize that I don't post here much (or anywhere else, really), but I read constantly and I feel like I know everybody personally. If I miss a few days for some reason, I lose a BIG chunk of knowledge (like how Em made it through her illlness), and I can't search to find the answers. This is a VERY active forum, and it would take hours to trudge back through every post to find a specific thread.

Is it a financial thing, or lack of manpower? It isn't fun, that's for sure.

It's not always disabled. The more people on the DIS causes the search function to shut down. Check the search very early in the AM before 9....the afternoon....sometimes around 2 I've gotten in and anytime after 10pm it ALWAYS seems to work. :D

According to recent posts by Alex, the boards are going to be soon migrating to more powerful servers. That may allow the search function to be available more often. Apparently the DIS boards are seeing more traffic than ever. Disabling search is a necessary evil.

that very well may be true, however I would think that by eliminating reposts would cut down on bandwith usage. go look at the orlando resort page, and see how many are the SAME question regarding HIFS...if they could search, they wouldnt have to post the question.

mudnuri, the flip side to that coin, is can you imagine the drag on the processes, if say, 5000 people were all searching at the same time?

Seeing what I see on my work system, ITA with Towncrier, in that it is somewhat of a neccessary evil, but that the powers that be are aware of it, and the new servers may help.

I think it's only disabled if I try to use it. I'm almost positive if I don't think to use it, it works.:teeth:

The dues were due to the Search Function Society, Inc. and nobody paid them. ;)

Do be do be do.......

Although search is disabled, you can still click on the column headings to sort the threads on a particular board according to the contents of that column. For instance, when I wanted to search for the thread about the new servers that was started by Alex, I went to the Community Board and clicked on the column titled "Thread Starter". All of Alex's posts just happened to show up on page 1. It's kind of a lame excuse for sort (especially for titles of threads which can vary wildly), but it's better than nothing when you are trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack.
