Why is the DVC such a "secret"? some newbie Q's

For us it was always RIGHT IN FRONT of us. We walked past the DVC information areas for 3 years thinking "what a rip off" that must be from our first trip in 1997 to 2000 when we finally realized we love WDW and plan to keep coming back so why not check into this. Best thing we ever did-just should have sooner. We loved Allstars and Moderates and thought, wow maybe someday we would stay a night or 2 at that Boardwalk looking thing on the vacation video.
