Why is nasal spray bad for you?

I hate spraying anything in my nose. A couple of months ago I had an upper respiratory thing, and the doc prescribed a spray for me. I must admit, it seemed to help, but I can't imagine using it unless absolutely necessary.:)

I prob. use Afrin 5 nights a week. Sometimes I get rebound congestion, usually I don't. I always limit my use to right before bed, and more in the one side than the other.

My ENT knows exactly what I'm doing. It's either that, or have a surgery every two years.

If you get congestion only at night when you lay down, that's the blood filling up parts of your nose do gravity. If you can sleep on one of those wedge pillows that elevates your body from the waste up, it can greatly eliminate that problem without meds.

I have the same problem with a stuffy nose at night. My ENT told me take a bottle of saline nose spray and squirt just a few squirts of Afrin into it. You'll need to take off the sprayer of the saline bottle to do this. It works just as well as plain Afrin, I swear! AND you don't have to worry about over loading on the addicting stuff. During allergy season I also have to use it in the AM along with Sudafed. And BTW that new Sudafed does NOT work! I have to go thru the whole process of going to the pharmacist, giving them my driver's license # and buying the old stuff. The new stuff not only doesn't work, it makes me sick to my stomach! ick!!
