Why is MGM's Brown Derby 2 TS?

I compared Brown Derby's menu to Le Cellier's and the prices are the same. And some places such as Teppanyaki have even higher prices. So what makes the Brown Derby a 2 TS restaurant?

I'd say the reason you aren't getting an answer is that none of us know why. Since there are other restaurants that are just as expensive, or even more so, it's obviously not based entirely on price. But I have no idea what other considerations went into the decision.

I know they they have a surf and turf there.

But yeah, it seems odd given that Le Cellier and Teppanyaki both have lobster tails.

I don't recall if Brown Derby was 2 wishes under any of the older plans (Discovery Magic, Silver plan).

Unfortunately, the answer is probably because they know they have you over a barrel if you want nice table service in the Studios.

There are limited table service options in the Studios, and the Brown Derby is the nicest, so they know many people will drop the 2 credits if they really want to eat there. The other parks have more table service options, and having more choice probably keeps many of the restaurants from going to 2 credits.

That's my best guess..............

If you do go to the brown derby, you have to have the grapefruit cake- it's my favorite food ina any of the parks!!

That's probably it ... they know people will do anything, including using 2 TS's, to get that grapefruit cake! :)

Because it is part of the Fantasmic! Dinner Package perhaps???

With Coral Reef going to 1 table service credit on Jan 1st, Brown Derby will be the only in-park 2 credit restaurant. well, unitil Cinderellas switches to 2 credits on Feb 1st. Anyway it does seem odd that all epcot restaurants will be 1 credit when The Derby and Cinderellas will be the only 2 of all park sit downs.

I agree with DisneyKidds. It is the nicest restaurant in Studios, so unless you want to travel to Epcot you're stuck. :flower:

I would gladly drop 2 TS credits to eat at the Derby. It is one of our absolute favorites!

I've read somewhere on this board that you can't order the lobster at Teppanyaki on the dining plan.

If I made an ADR for Coral Reef now (for 4/06), will they still accept the 1 TS credit when we're there or do I need to wait til January?

oh! I didn't know that about the Coral Reef- looks like I'll have an extra TS credit to play around with now! ;)

I agree, the Derby is a great restaurant and one we hit every trip. I'll have some tough choices to make seeing as the dining plan will be offered to DVC members for stays starting in April. It seems like a good value. Of course the accountant in me can find a way to show that it isn't as good a value as it seems when a restaurant like the Derby is 2 TS credits ;).

For one, if we use 2 TS credits there it means we'll have to pay out of pocket for a meal some other time. So that lowers the value of the plan. Secondly, when you look at the dollars and cents, while the Derby really is worth what 2 TS credits cost for most people, what you have to give up to eat there might not be. If I'm paying $38 a day it pretty much breaks down like this:

A snack is worth about $2.50
A Counter Service Meal is worth $13.50 or so.
So that means I'm paying about $22 for my TS credit.

There is no way that a meal at the Derby isn't worth $22. However, if I have to use 2 it means I'm paying about $44 for my Brown Derby Meal. An appetizer, a steak, drink and dessert will set most people back at least that much.....but of course with the Disney Dining Experience discount I have it wouldn't.

So, if I use 2 TS credits I'm really paying more than I would out of pocket for that meal........not to mention the fact that I could eat at a place like Le Cellier (which is just as good as or better than the Derby) twice for the same credits. That would stick in my craw.

Like I said, tough choice. I'd hate to have the accountant in me keep me from eating at the Derby with the plan, and the plan is attractive because with it we could eat a little better for the same amount per day we just spent on our last trip.

I should be so lucky that this would be one of my toughest decisions over the next year, right? ;)

The Derby is a signature restaurant. All signature restaurants are 2 credits.
Yes, but why is it a signature restaurant?

It isn't any nicer or more expensive than a lot of other restaurants that require only one TS credit. It just happens to be the nicest option in the Studios. While the Derby is nice, given the other options out there for your TS credits it really isn't worth 2 TS credits, IMHO. They just know a lot of people will use 2 TS credits there because the options are limited in the park.

I personally consider the Brown Derby one of the best restaurants on property, while not quite up to California Grill, Citricos or Flying Fish standards, definetly an equal to Artist Point or Jiko's. Definitely better that Mama Melroses (which I don't think is aweful and will eat at again.
