Why is Matterhorn only at disneyland

I have been to Magic Kingdom many times. Last year though I went to disneyland and saw the Matterhorn. I thought it couldn't be any fun or what not because they dont have it in Magic Kingdom, but boo was I wrong. Anyone know why they don't have it in Orlando?

I always wondered if it had some sort of significance or if it just took so much time to build?

I really do not know. But I would take WDW's Expedition Everest (and their Yeti) over DL's Matterhorn (and their much smaller Yeti) any day.

FWIW, DL has many rides not found at MK or WDW and it is not because of quality. Indiana Jones comes to mind first.

Disney does not try to create carbon copies of their parks.

News for you...all the awesome attractions aren't all at MK. I mean Fantasmic is better at DL than WDW. At least when all the characters come out at DLs original version, its on the Mark Twain than on that little tug boat thing Florida has at the end. LOL.

Matterhorn was built in the late 1950s and is the world's first steel-tubed rollercoaster. Apparently Walt hated how the sky lift tower was exposed and stood out in his park so on a trip to the Alps he realized he wanted a replica of the Matterhorn to give that area of the park some aesthetic value as it was just a dirt lot with a steel tower in the middle (to supoort the sky lift).

Matterhorn was probably never built in MK was that it is not a terribly efficient ride with getting enough people on it every hour and also the cost would have been huge to build the steel mountain again back in 1971 when MK opened. After that they just moved on to other attractions and parks and never got around to building one.

I like that Matterhorn is a one-off ride and I think DL up against MK, park to park (not including the other parks) MK has nothing on DL. DL has major things over MK but MK really has nothing over DL, all the advantages to MK are that it has more surrounding parks to visit.

A number of rides I feel are better at DL than MK that are at the two... Most notably though is SM.

Indy is at both, just it's called Dinosaur and has a different theme at AK than the Indy ride at DL. I like Indy much better.

I will go on record though as saying Matterhorn is not my favorite ride. It's one I can miss when I get to DL, because it's a not as smooth a ride as I'd like. However, I love the historical aspect of the ride and the occasional views of the park.

IMO any DL fan has to admit that MK does have some classics:

Being that your name is of a DL attraction not featured at MK you should know better!

TSI... The original? I don't think so. DL has the original island, personally designed on a piece of paper by Walt himself. By the time MKs island opened DLs had been entertaining visitors for over 15 years.

I like Liberty Square but not nearly as much as New Orleans Square. MK is great but MK park compared to the original just seems like a rushed knock-off of DL park.

I love the Muppets....but....I've seen it 8-9 times. If they aren't going to come up with a new Muppet Movie then i can't think of a better place to put Mickey's Philharmagic than the Muppet Theatre....it would be a natural in the Hollywood area of DCA.

(& I'd love for them to put COP in one of those Tomorrowland buildings....what a great attraction to snag a 20 min. nap. )

I agree with other posters on this, that it was probably too costly, difficult to build, and/or wasn't needed at MK.

WDW's answer to the Matterhorn, though, is their new ride at AK-Expedition Everest! That ride is so much more fun, anyway, than Matterhorn, imo. Matterhorn is a great icon, though-you just need a chiropractor when you get off!

Star Tours should get an update in the next couple years, orignally the plan a couple years ago was for 2008 to usher in a new ST film but it's just not looking like it will happen soon. Hopefully George is finishing that ST2 film up so we can all have something Star Wars to look forward to.

Get the book The Disney Mountains: Imagineering at Its Peak by Jason Surrell. It contains an artist's rendering of a proposed Swiss Pavilion for Epcot, complete with its own Matterhorn. Unfortunately, like a lot of proposed pavilions, it was never built.

Star Tours should get an update in the next couple years, orignally the plan a couple years ago was for 2008 to usher in a new ST film but it's just not looking like it will happen soon. Hopefully George is finishing that ST2 film up so we can all have something Star Wars to look forward to.

I didn't mean get rid of Bugs Life! I just meant update the movie eventually, like Muppets and Star Tours. I love them all, but seen them hundreds, maybe thousands, of times! lol Star Tours definately needs the first change, since it's been there for how many years?!?!

Tomorrowland is definately lacking without an overhead ride of some kind-the atmosphere is just not there.
