Why is March Madness so popular every year?

Every March I never have understood why March Madness has become a big affair next to the Super Bowl and the World Series because it seems that every year March Madness has gotten overhyped and overpromoted. Because I have seen commercials for pizza chains like Little Caesars Pizza and Domino's promote deals for March Madness and even Coca-Cola promotes March Madness by having contests. In my eyes I think college basketball has seen a giant rise in viewership which is why March Madness continues to get strong ratings every year. But to me they have given March Madness the Super Bowl-type treatment these days and CBS thinks that these college basketball games are giving them ratings and I mean huge ratings every year

If CBS wasn't making money on March Madness, they wouldn't continue it, so I guess I don't understand your confusion.

March Madness is fun. If you've never lived anywhere with a big time, competitive college basketball team, you probably won't get it. DH got his PhD at Syracuse. Our first year there was 1986-87. We quickly learned what it means and how it effects daily life, living in a city with a highly competitive basketball team, and had the 'honor' of experiencing the agony of defeat when Indiana beat Syracuse by 1 point in the last 4 seconds of the National Title Game. NCAA basketball is a huge moneymaker for the schools, and the fandom is crazy- going to games, rallies, participating in playoff pools, etc. We are still Syracuse fans (albeit not as rabid as before) and always will be. I clearly remember being on my knees in the living room, tears of excitement in my eyes, as Boeheim & the Boys won the National Title in 2003 over Kansas! GO, ORANGE, GO!!

Honestly, I could give a rat's patootie about the SuperBowl or World Series when compared to March Madness. I mean, it's nice to see the Pats and Sox win, but it's not March Madness and the NCAA basketball tournament!

Why do businesses, including CBS, think so many people are interested in March Madness? The fact is, they are. There are "die hard" fans of every team at every level. They're going to watch their team compete no matter what. For some, they think "this is the year" and they have a shot at winning a National Championship (that's a big deal). For others, they think "we can upset one of the big boys". So you have the fan bases from 68 teams interested. Then you have the people who like college basketball. Then you get the people who like seeing upsets. They like the emotion. They may be in a bracket pool at work or among friends. I used to run one and there would be people who knew nothing about college basketball who would put $5 in the pot and submit their bracket. That gives you interest in every game, even after "your" team (if they even made it) is eliminated.

And let's look at numbers for last year's games...
The first two rounds of games (so 48 games) AVERAGED 9.4 Million viewers per game.
The Final Four averaged 15.5 Million, the highest in eight years.
The Championship averaged 18.1Million, up 22% from 2024.
Overall tournament attendance surpassed 700,000 for the third straight year.

People are interested in the event. Companies are going to take advantage of it.

To put it in perspective,
The Super Bowl 2026 had ~125 Million Viewers
World Series 2025 averaged 17.9 Million
The Masters 2025 had 12.7 Million
NBA Finals 2025 averaged 10.2 Million

So yes, March Madness gets the viewership.

Sports is an addiction for many. Throw in sports betting, office bracket challenges and the like and it's worse.

It's a lot of fun for many people and it's the rare sporting event where the little guy can upset the giants. Doesn't happen often, but when it does it's fun to watch. Most tournaments have already weeded out the little guys before they even get there. Like the football stupidity that doesn't even give the lower conferences a chance to play in the tournament.

I used to love it. Grew up in ACC country at the height of the great dynasties down there. But now I no longer care for it since it's basically become "pro basketball-lite" with the rise of NIL. It just more people being grossly overpaid for playing and coaching a literal game. There's so much more that kind of money could be used for that I just find it hard to stomach anymore.

March Madness does give CBS and its sister stations huge ratings. My son and I make a bracket, watch the games and just have fun with it.

I don't normally have a team to root for, but this year the Fairfield women's basketball team is up again Notre Dame this Saturday! GO STAGS!!! It's their 3rd year in a row getting to the tournament, but they don't normally have a chance to get farther in the madness.

I think it's more if you like basketball and competition. I love basketball and I prefer college to professional. Now I have a game to be interested in and I will do all I can to watch!

To be fair, they do have a chance and it's totally within their discretion. Simply play the "Big" teams during the regular season and win. That will get them in the tournament.

Or, expanding to 64 teams would also allow more teams in, but that would be adding two additional weeks to the tournament (16 teams = 4 weeks, 64 teams = 6 weeks).

Yup draws viewers. I worked at an ABC station that became a CBS station right before March Madness started in 1995.. We wondered why the former CBS affiliate staff were sooooo excited to be rid of CBS. We found out why. No Colleges anywhere near us usually make the tournament. That may be why we were ranked #200 (out of 210 designated markets) in total viewership of March madness. Our new General Manager was a career CBS guy and he was so excited that the affiliation switch was coming just before March Madness. Had a big kick off party for the staff before it started After it was over, all he could say was "people here just don't watch College sports like other parts of the nation". After it was all said and done, at least here, the ratings were a wash, not much different than regular programming. But not the boost our GM expected. And he also said he was surprised as he made the rounds of community groups to introduce himself how many people asked if we HAD to run those games? Viewers were accustomed to the legacy NBC station that was allowed to not run NBC programming, often running their public affairs programming in prime time, replacing a poorly watch NBC network show.

We're all in the breakroom celebrating a great shot, bad miss, win, loss, whatever. It just brings the office together for 2 days out of the year.

I was in a store that shows my age...a whole bank of TVs for sale...the mall crowd cheering that Roseburg boy..... after all the #1 team had been beaten by a tiny little speck of a school in the first round.... that is madness !!!!!

I think part of the fun is that it's structured in a way where an underdog can have a chance. Even if you don't have a legitimate favorite, you've got these mid-majors pitted against powerhouses in the early stages. While it doesn't happen all the time...it's not uncommon for David to take down Goliath every now and then. Even more magical is when the proverbial David/Cinderella rides that momentum and isn't just invited to the ball...they make the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 and become sort of the belle of the ball. It makes it incredibly exciting.

That being said, if you attended a school that routinely has a presence in the tournament, it's likely become part of your culture...even if you weren't big on sports. I attended Syracuse in the early to mid 90s and basketball season was just everywhere I went...even if I didn't attend a single game. We had traditions and superstitions, it was always part of the chatter, and when we won...it was a blast to be out and celebrating with other students and alums. We sort of carry that into adulthood around others who attended other schools with similar basketball cultures. Now, not every person/student has this angle, but it's even more fun if you have occasion for some of these people to wind up in your social world. I'll spare you my stories but it certainly adds to the excitement and reminiscing when March Madness rolls around.
