Why is it.....

It's not the words themselves that bug me. It's the fact that when said aloud, you are actually saying would've or should've or could've. As in would have, should have, could have. People hear would've and since is sounds like would of, assume that is how it is spelled. Hope that explains it for you.

Gotcha. I thought you were talking about the expression itself.

When I say it out loud, it would be spelled like this, Shoulda, coulda, woulda. I talk fast, even though I am from the south. I am weird that way.

I really can't say anything about spelling. I am pretty good at it, sometimes the brain is lazy, and sometimes I am just flying and my fingers can't keep up. My kids start wanting me and I just don't have the time to go back and fix it.

I really hate to complain about bad spellers, and yes I know that spell check is available, but sometimes people get lazy.

I don't think it has to do with intelligence. My DH and DS14 are smart, IQ level they are at genius. Can't spell their name. On the other hand D10, very average in intelligence, but can spell any word he hears.

You know what drives me bonkers when people point out others spelling mistakes

Yep, we all have things that we are good at. Some people are bad spellers and some are great spellers. This is a message board. It is relaxed. DH never send out a letter in regards to his business without checking all spelling and even having me and neighbor(para legal) check it for accuracy. But on a chat board, forget it.

Wasn't Einstein a horrible speller? :confused3

I don't know... I think there are some aspects of the English language that need a little more pushing. I really don't think one should have to refer to an online "slang" dictionary in order to decipher a sentence.

What really got me was the HLN (formerly Headline News) now uses abbreviations on the bottom line. It's almost as if you have to be in the "know" to read the news! :sad2:

Einstein didn't talk until almost 4, he was almost kicked out of school. They thought he was stupid.

For what it is worth, I do hate when people really mess up language. I am certainly not an english major, but I can get through a conversation sounding like I did study grammar.

They actually teach very little grammar in the elementary schools where I am, drives me crazy. They do seem to be teaching it in the middle school.

I think one poster's suggestion really gets to the heart of why spelling and grammar are important:comprehension. If we all use the same"system" (standard English), there's a much better chance we'll understand each other. Once we slip into "see spell" and lots of slang, we risk confusing our readers.

And, yes, I'm an English teacher....:)

Making a typo or something of that matter is one thing. Contnually using the wrong word is quite another. Is it serious? I don't think I would use that word to describe it but I do wonder sometimes if people actually understand what they are writing.
Oh- and it is not becoming more relaxed etc. The English language is the English language. That is just laziness and celebrating mediocrity. I think we have enough mediocrity. Why not strive for a little more at least? YMMV.

ETA-See spell? What in the world is that? If I sent something to my boss and I wrote it "see spell" I would have been fired.[QUOTE]

Sorry, but what is it supposed to be? :confused3
I wasn't commenting on the spelling I was asking how one writes a letter in "see spell." The poster was implying that you just write anything that looks okay (I think) and that's just fine. I can't even imagine sending out a document like that.

Oh, thanks for clearing that up. I thought you were saying that someone spelled it see spell instead of ________________ ( this is the part I couldn't figure out )

See spell confused me too... I assume you are talking phonetic (fonetik) spelling vs the real deal?

I cringe when I see "wallah." It's almost like people hear a word and want to use it but have no idea how it's spelled so they just make it up.:confused3

I've talked to DW about this as she uses that one a lot. She insists that she's intentionally saying "wallah" and not wanting to say "voila" but she uses it like she means "voila." It's hard to convey to some people that things like that can make a very intelligent person sound ignorant. Especially if I want to sleep in the bed at night

My other peeves: they're, there and their getting misused all over the place.

Whenever I see a thread like this I am drawn to it like a moth to a flame :lmao:

Another one that bugs me is when people say foyer like it rhymes with lawyer. It is a french word and is supposed to be pronounced foy-a.
I'm sure I'll be back with more. :snooty:

Is it really that serious? I mean, sometimes people just lose their train of thought or momentarily get confused. I consider myself to be highly intelligent, but I've certainly used too when I should've used to or their instead of there.....it happens. I usually proofread my stuff, but everybody doesn't have time to go over a post to make sure it's "perfect" for the professors of the board.

Furthermore, it's all becoming really, really relaxed in this day and age. People can see spell what they want--how they want --and it's not that big of a deal.

Yes, it is kind of serious. Sure, it is great to be relaxed on a message board but kids today (the infamous "Kids today" :goodvibes) write so much on message boards and text on their phones and it carries back to school. DD is in her first year at grad school. After their first writing assignment the professor praised many of their thoughts but said a lot of the papers were written like kindergartners. That is appalling!

One that drives me absolutely bonkers is "setting" vs. "Sitting." I have a friend that CONSTANTLY types and (sometimes says outloud) that she is "setting on the couch." No,Honey, you are SITTING on the couch. She will say she is "SITTING the table." I want to ask her if she wipes down the table after SITTING on it so that it is clean when she SETS it:headache:

I'm by no means perfect, but sometimes, it's just hard not to hear these things and shake your head.

Sorry, but while it may be more acceptable on a message board, it's not becoming more relaxed in the real world. People can absolutely spell what they want but it's a huge deal in some instances. If I get a job application with grammatical and spelling errors, it goes in the "no" pile. Proofreading and attention to detail is part of the job description. If one is used to being sloppy while typing online, it carries over to important documents, as well.

Plus, if someone repeatedly uses the wrong word, it makes them look ignorant and I have a hard time taking them seriously. I hate loose for lose, the interchangeable use of advice and advise, and random apostrophes. I cringe when I see "wallah." It's almost like people hear a word and want to use it but have no idea how it's spelled so they just make it up.:confused3

Okay, okay....I see where you guys are coming from. Actually, I tend to agree. Please don't think that I was implying that it was okay to be grammatically relaxed in school or in one's profession. I thought you all were referring to people on public forums. I just didn't see the big deal about folks failing to correct their spelling or neglecting to use proper grammar on a message board.

That one bothers me, but not nearly as much as the your vs. you're confusion. It especially irritates me when it is used improperly in an insulting situation, as in, "your so dumb." No, you are.

:rotfl2::thumbsup2

Oh and if you are going to write a letter to the school please do not write "Dear Mrs. So and So, I spoke to the principle about xyz." It makes you look like an idiot.

I would have to disagree. I work at a school, and beleive me, there are far worse mistakes found in letters to the school than the mispelling of principal.

That it is so hard for some people to differentiate WOMAN (singular) from WOMEN (plural). I'm not picking on any single poster, but I have seen this numerous times over the past few weeks. One of my peeves.

This drives me crazy!!!!!!!!

Sometimes I will stop reading because of it or just bad grammar in general.

Advice/advise is right at the top of that list.
