still can't wrap my head around why a 2br (especially a lockoff) isn't equal in points to a 1br and studio booked separately. anyone know why this is the case? i mean dont' get me wrong I'm happy about it. but how does disney do this?

It doesn't make sense to me either. The only difference in related costs incurred is that the studio and 1BR booked separately have two check-ins. Everything else would be the same.

I think It's about control of inventory vs demand. If they were equal, anyone wanting a 2 bedroom would simply book a 1BR and a Studio and then demaid that they be next to each other. Big headache for DVD. And that would make less capacity for 1BR and Studios.

but isn't the inventory still the same? if all the studios are booked first day then no 2br left? I suppose you must be right though or the 2br would be more points

I don't think anyone but Disney knows for sure how the inventory for lock-off units actually works. It seems that at a place like BWV, where there are no dedicated 2 bedroom units, that the system has some rooms available as 2 bedrooms, some as 1 bedrooms and some as studios. If all studios get booked and there are still 2 bedrooms available does the system then start "breaking up" the 2 bedrooms to add studio inventory? I have never seen anything on the DIS with a definitive answer to questions like that.

Would it be the kitchette that makes the prices different?

I wonder if the prices are higher as well to encourage people not to book a studio+1 when they could do a 2 bedroom so that there are more chances of multiple families going into the studio+1. Think about it with a 2 bedroom it is usually the same traveling party. With the studios + 1 if they aren't booked together you could have one travel party in a studio and another travel party in the 1 bedroom. Although it is probably the same number of people two separate parties usually end up spending more than one big party traveling together.

I talked to a cm at member services years ago about this at BWV. I booked at 11 months and wanted to request a dedicated 1 bedroom. He said I already had it. He said they book the dedicated studios & 1 bedrooms first, then start breaking up the lockoffs if needed. I usually do get a dedicated studio or 1 bedroom.

Interesting. This would mean that the room assigner has fewer options for matching requests than I thought, since it sounds like you were already assigned a dedicated room.

The short answer is they can. My guess is their thinking was that there are extra costs associated with the smaller units on a per item basis and to discourage smaller unit usage in favor of larger units both on the front end for purchase and in actual usage later. I can't think of another system or resort that does it this way off hand but then I can't think of another that has a 1 BR double the studio either.

I believe at one point they were actually booking those as a booking category, I suspect this was in effect at the time DebbieB was inquiring about this. However, the end result is still pretty much the same since only a smaller portion of the 1 BR and studios will be lockoff's at any one time. The difference now is that one has a chance at a lockoff if needed where if it was hard booked, that would't be possible. Normally this is only applicable if trying to join up a smaller room with a larger room reservation such as having a 1 BR for a few days then a 2 BR.
