Why in the Heck would it be cheaper for more days?

I just booked a minivan with Dollar. When I tried the dates 12/22/06 thru 12/31/06 it came up $865. When I tried 12/21/60-12/31/06 it came up with a cheaper rate of $414.00. More days cheaper rate?? Our dates for flying are the 22nd and the 31st. I did a bad thing and booked them both for right now.........I am on the phone right now with Dollar to see if they can help. It does not make sense...AM I missing something????? Has anyone ever had this happen? It seems so weird to me. It is a matter of hours since we fly in late.....we are due to arrive at 12:00 midnight.

A couple of things... one lots of discounts are "blocked" the closer you get to Christmas. So by coming in the 22nd you are hitting a more expensive period. I ran into this a few years ago. I was coming back from a cruise on about the 22nd and actually found it cheaper just to pay for the car to be parked at the port!

The other thing is it looks like you might be getting two weekly rates for the longer reservation and getting a week and a daily rate for the extra days on the shorter reservation.

You didn't do anything wrong making the two reservations, but it won't do you any good. When you don't show up on 12/21 the reservation will be cancelled.

I called DOLLAR and spoke to the most wonderful young man. I explained that if we came in on Dec 21 at 11:45 pm it would be $500 cheaper than if we came in the next day. He listened and then he put me on hold for quite some time. When he came back he said there were quite a few minivans left for the 22 and the 23 so he fixed our original ressie to reflect the price!! I am now in love with this man!!! I asked for them to please send me out a copy via email but I also took down names. I asked to speak to a supervisor and I just told him how happy I was. He said he was glad that they were able to help. I also tole him how wonderful the first yound man was and he said it was nice to hear. I also got his name and his ext # just in case I don't get a copy of the new ressie in my email. I am thrilled!!!! We never have this kind of luck!!!! YEAH!!!!!

We have the newly priced reservation in our hands. I feel like it is already Christmas!!! I am thrilled. One of the huge things we worry about is getting a good rate for a minivan for DS and his wheelchair. Now, I am done and I don't even have to keep checking rates!

Thrifty had really good rates for this time frame. I got a mini van for 12/25/06 to 1/1/07 for $220.00

Don't know if you got better, just thought I'd share since I got the tip here.

We got Dollar 12/22 thru 12/31 for $414. I am thrilled. We had National from $853 and Dollar was originally $800 and somthing. We went with Dollar as we have always used Dollar or National because we are "members" of their programs. I think I will look over at Thrify though......oh no here I go again.....
