Why I love the DVC Board...

I bounce back and forth through the various DIS Boards, figuring that I can learn from all. Even though we're now DVC members and don't have to worry about room codes and value vs. moderate vs. deluxe resorts, I do try to read the Budget Board. However, I have found the Budget Board inhabited by a peculiar breed of individual which thinks that a Disney vacation is the right of every individual regardless of economic status. The enabling and encouragement of dangerous behaviour such as multiple trips despite being unemployed or underemployed is rampant there and the suggestion that one might reconsider a Disney vacation (or their 4th Disney vacation this year) in the face of economic uncertainties draws a vitriolic response.
Why is the DVC Board different? I don't pretend that we are all rich individuals nor do I pretend that everyone out here is sitting on a huge nest-egg. What I have seen here is honest responses that have actually suggested the time for investment in DVC is not right at this time for someone because of their current financial status. The DVC Board seems to be inhabited by a more level headed and calmer individual than might otherwise be found on some of the other DIS Boards. Thanks for being who you are. This is a great community to be a part of. I can't wait to go home in January to meet the rest of our neighbours.:sunny:

You said a mouthful Neil!;)

We'll be at SSR from Jan 9-21st. Hope to see you there!

Well, we are a largely level-headed bunch, most of the time. Just don't get us started on the price at which other ppl should rent out their points, or whose resort is better, or worst yet, why if we're so "magical" why doesn't the Company give DVC members get discounts on APs. These topics get folks riled up, and they become distinctly non-level-headed (what would that be? pointy-headed?).

I find the budget board interesting because of e-bay references. One day I have to take the plunge, but for now, it's a vicarious experience. I like the community board for the word games. I come here to read about my neighbors.

:D

This is just my obeservation of the people I know who own DVC as well as most of the posters here on the DVC boards. It seems to me that most DVC owners are more financially secure, generally a little older, and ocasionally a litttle more mature than the average poster on the budget boards. (or maybe not)

I think one reason for this is the large financial committment it taks to become a member. Whether you have the cash on hand or you are financing the purchase, most people take a purchase of this size seriously and do a great deal of research before making the committment.

This gives a lot of the discussions on this board a more serious tone, but we have also seen posts on this board from people who have bought on impulse and regretted the purchase, or people who did not fully understand what they were buying into as well.

The beauty of WDW is the range of options available to everyone. You can do it on a shoestring budget or you can spend a LOT of money. I'm sure there are people in both groups who get caught up in the magic and spend beyond their means. Lets hope those acting irresponsible are the minority.

I deleted my post. It really didn't sound too nice. It did not come out the way I intended it to. Sorry about that :( .

Well, I can't characterize all the posters on the Budget board with one sweeping statement, but when I've ventured over there I have seen lots of people very willing to share tips and such on how to save money travelling to WDW, while at WDW, and for WDW.

Actually, the only thing I do tend to see there that bothers me is the willingness to share "tips" that are basically breaking the rules. I don't need to elaborate, but many are tips on how to avoid legitimate charges. I just don't care for advising people to save money by, basically, cheating.

But other than that, I think the people are mostly helpful. And maybe their obsession shows a little more than ours here on the DVC board?

Naaaahhh!! :earsboy:

You are right Granny, all on the Budget board posters are certainly not to be considered not frugal or careful. I post there after all ;) ! All kidding aside, there are plenty of wise people on that board, that is why I frequent it. But when someone really wants to be able to spend money that they don't have, you can bet that someone will give them the reason that they deserve it or worked so hard for it or should treat their family to it. This mentality is very much in this world, but you don't see it too often here on the DVC board.

any dvcer would want to visit the budget board other than to see how the other half lives.
dvcers don't break the rules like staying five in a one bedroom, nor do they tell people to stay after hours when the pool closes.

Believe me, I am not trying to flame you or offend you in any way. But posts and the lines of thinking like this, are exactly why many other posters to the DIS boards and other internet Disney boards, consider many of the posters on the DIS DVC board to be both very snobby and condenscending.

I guess I don't get around enough on the boards. I've never thought we were arrogant and/or condescending. And I don't recall anyone saying so.

:jumping1: Oh, man.....the funniest part is anybody who's met you knows how truthful that statement is!!!!!

p.s. I'll see you over on the budget board!;)

Gosh, I've found 99% of the folks who post here are exceptionally wise and helpful. So many people ask questions here (many times the same questions over and over) and accurate replies are always quickly given...usually with a "good luck" or comparable greeting. I can only think of one post that I've read (recently, anyway) where the OP asking questions did not like the answer they received and went on to complain about it. I cannot imagine why people from other boards and other areas of the DIS would find DVCers snobby or condescending.

I have noticed that DVCers tend to be the type of people who usually "do their homework" when it comes to DVC (and almost any aspect of their life...you should see the info I have about 529 plans sitting in front of me). When other folks come here to ask questions, we tend to ask the right questions to get them thinking about what is best for their personal situation. That can be tough for some people, but I think almost everyone who posts here has their best interest at heart.

I don't consider my self arrogant or condescending, but I am also not going to apologize for working hard and being wise with how I spent my money which enabld me to purchase a beautiful vacation opportunity. Being wise with how I spent my money did not include taking vacations I couldn't afford. If that makes me an arrogant, condescending snob, then so be it.

Whatever. I am only stating some of the opinions that I have read regarding DVC members on both other DIS boards and also on non DIS but still, Disney related boards. To be prefectly honest, the first time I read such comments; I too was somewhat surprised, that this was the way in which DVC members were viewed by many on the net. However, after swallowing my pride as a DVC member, and then going back and reading some of the responses and attitudes that come across---I can see where some of these preceptions are coming from.
Sorry if I have offended anyone, that was certainly not my intention.

I haven't visited the budge board and have no opinion about it or its members. But I will say that I read pages and pages of postings on this board while I was trying to decide whether or not to buy into DVC. The "welcome home" atmosphere on this board and the genial way in which many people converse with each other made a great impression on me and probably influenced my final decision.
:p

This board to me is much like the budget board with people always answering questions about the price of something included and how to save a buck here and there. Today there is someone posting about the tubes over at the BCV pool and the cost etc, can they bring their own. I have seen this board fall down to the level of the budget board years ago. You also have questions designed to beat the system-like capacity of rooms and other rules. Then there are others with people trying to beat the system out of a few bucks here and there. The DVC members are not all as well off as they should be to join. Over the years the DVC membership has been sold as a savings. We also have many people now using the membership to rent points from for $10 a point which no where near the cost of the room if they rented it from CRO. There was one poster that thought the "demographic" would change at SSR with the price being higher. Over at the BCV people at the front desk have been treated like "poor cousins" I wonder why. Most people don't say much about this subject because it is a little unkind but it has to be said once in awhile. I say it more than most. WDW has opened itself open to everyone and is appealing more and more to a different demographic then it did when it first opened up. I stopped reading most of the boards on this site because they are just filled with people that should not be leaving their driveway never mind thinking of going to WDW. At least at DVC most of the guests can afford to leave their driveway.

While I did NOT consider the OP condescending at all- I think THIS is a great example of the condescending attitude that makes people uncomfortable with this board.

Or parking at BWV or the Poly(when not a guest at the resort) in order to gain quick or easy access to Epcot or MK. DVC members do this????? NO WAY! Sure--they are probably among the biggest group of offenders. But hey, we are much better than those low class people on the budget board--Give me a break!
