Why I don't think Contemporary will go DVC

While I would be the first person to buy Contemporary DVC points, I'm not sure it will happen. I just came back from a conference at the Contemporary. We had 2,000 members attend the conference and because the Contemporary was sold out, the other members had to stay all over the place.
Wouldn't it make more sense for Disney to build more rooms for their conference attendees?

While I, too, would love to see DVC at the CR, I am less sure than most on these boards that it is a "done deal." Rumor has it, though, that the South wing is also coming down? Not sure what will happen, but DVC certainly is only one option...could be family suites, could be luxury suites, could be conference-oriented. And it could be DVC.

I too would buy there. But as I have said for many years now, I don't think we will get to. Even though DVC is great for Disney, so is the convention buisness. WDW lacks a true modern luxury convention destintation. CSR is ok, but not for the upscale conventions that are popular today.

but get your flame suits on, because there are those that know more about buisness, resorts, property managment and conventions on these boards than we do.

contemporary4me, when you say people "stay all over the place," do you mean other WDW hotels or off site? Wouldn't Disney be OK with attendees staying at other WDW hotels?

I have been to a lot of "upscale conventions." I would stay at the CR for a convention in a heartbeat, but have never had the opportunity. (In fact I would probably stay at the Poly and take the monorail over to the meetings.) The smaller meetings are usually at more upscale hotels like Ritz, as canda mentioned, but that's not my choice.

I have a meeting coming up somewhere in Orlando in September -- my fingers are crossed.

Here's the real deal according to me. The North building was originally planned as a DVC. Last year WDW hit a all time high in attendance and this year is projected to be even busier. The numbers were reworked and due to the shortage of rooms and a projected slow down of a saturated DVC market, DVC lost the North building and more profitable, larger suite style rooms are now planned. DVC will also occupy the North building but on a smaller scale than originally planned. Architects and bean counters are finalizing the new interior plans and foundation work for the North building is completed and construction will begin soon. The new South building which will be a mirror of the North building will be regular rooms. The models for the new CRV will be next to the AKV model at the DVC preview center. DVC units will be available for purchase at CRV in 2010 or 2011 depending upon the sales pace of AKV.

Nice, I take offense to that. I too could see mixed use and we would certainly add on. I look at that as a best of both worlds for Disney.

Do you have a source on the inside regarding DVC saturation and projected slow down, or is this just conjecture on your part? Not saying I totally disagree with this, just wondering if you know something us regular bean counters don't!

I think CR is a cash Cow for Disney......
I have stayed there for a convention our other choice was the GF altghough it may not seem like a big deal but to take the Monorail early in the morning and going back to the room to change etc it can be an inconvience. Some of the guests stayed at the GF from our company some outside people stayed at the POLY at full rack rate as the GF rooms were gone and CR was full....
I would love CR to be DVC as far as buying there????? I do not like the resort that much but I would not mind having this as a possible option.

The other attendees did stay at Disney Resorts (Wilderness, Carribean Beach, Key West, etc) But the day was jam packed and they (the attendees) complained that they didn't have time to run back to their rooms during the break. We only had one 40 minute break midday.

In 2014 we are at the Swan, I can't wait!

I disagree with most of you. I think that the CRV is only a matter of when, not if.

CSR and Swan are both on-property convention centers. I think if Disney has the option of renting to 2,000 single convention attendees who will be in a conference all day and then will likely leave to go off-site somewhere to eat and network with their co-workers or 2,000 families of four that are going to buy 7 day park tickets, Dining Plan, and spend $$$$$ on Mickey baloons, ice cream, photopasses, hats, pins, etc - they'd rather have the families.

And yes, sometimes conference atendees can bring families - but not often. I had a conference @ WDW with schools that work and I could not have brought the family or done parks, and our youth minsiter went w/out family to CSR for a conference and did no parks. Most conference atenddes are not going to be pouring anywhere near the amount of $$$$ back into the parks that Disney wants.

How about saying something like.....

"Though the convention buisness is good for WDW and they would like to have better facilities, DVC is a great upfront cash grab for the Disney portfolio. If it sells quickly, then that will be millions in the bank. then with the maint. dues paying for monorail upkeep it will be a win for everyone.

A CM at Cont told my DW in June that the construction was for DVC. Unsolicited, I may add.

I think it will also be join use - until the south wing goes up. then the north wing will only be DVC. the South wing will be for Cont guests.

boy will there be fussing on the resort boards. right now and for as long as the south wing is around - it is a nice place not to expensive. but building luxury suites will be very expensive....

of course if I am right - then we (DVC members) should get the part of the building closest to the MK. because the other guests (conventioneer) would want to be closer to the convention center - which is on the other side of the CR. Which is why the South wing would be much better for this.

I won't at all be surprise when they change the South wing - they make direct access to the convention area. So you don't have to go through the tower to get in the door.

just wish they would get busy and fix the Pop! although rumor mill has it finally to begin again in October.

I don't believe that the entire building will be for guest only. It is just too big. Luxury suites are expensive and I don't think the demand is that great for them at WDW.

DVC will get half or more, then the luxury suites will get the rest. but only until the south wing is build.

that is my opinion for what it is worth - zero!!!!

but it is so much fun to guess what WDW is going!

I don't know. I still think that if the CR North Tower isn't going to be DVC, Disney would have announced/promoted it already like they have with every other new resort. Why the big mystery? I think the Florida timeshare laws are preventing any announcement. I will patiently wait and save my pennies... If the tower/s is/are (I am excited at the thought of two CR towers!) going to be mixed use - regular rooms/suites/DVC - why won't anyone admit to the new construction? They could easily not mention the DVC part of the equation. Only time will tell...

I belonged to a large industry organization when I was still working(on the board of directors). We did a board meeting at the GF and were not impressed with the service, plus WDW could not guarnatee everyone in the same hotel, so we went off site to Grand Cypress.

CR's faclities are not sufficient anymore for the demands of Orlando conventions, it gets VERY few of the 'upscale conventions' A LOT of those are now at the Gaylord....

Besides they know that DVC members are expecting it.

I don't know how many members are waiting to buy at CR and NOT buying at AKV because they like me can't afford both.

I really think DVC would have say - we AREN'T building at the CR to increase sales at AKV.

I think you partially answered your own question. I think the other part of the equation is that SSR isn't sold out yet and AKV really is just beginning and there are a lot of points over there to sell. Is it a possibility that Jane and John Doe who are thinking about buying AKV or SSR would delay their purchase if they knew a Contemporary DVC was in the works 2 or 3 years down the road? I think so. I know an add on is in our future, and I am delaying until I know whether Contemporary is or is not a DVC.

I could see them selling two locations at the same time, but not 3. They've done that before already.

Actually in our group the attendees(mostly the ones with kids) were really geeked about staying on site. It was the planners who shot down the onsite after dealing with the GF staff.

The Entire second or third floor (I can not remember) is convetion rooms. CR has one large room and several smaller ones and there is in general multiple convenions. They also do offer discounted park tickets to the guests and in general free admission to PI as the convetion who do not go to the parks will most likely drink alot

But I also have to agree OP this is by far not upscale. We also did dinners at the Wyndham which was by far better than what Disney could offer... and also more $$..
Which ever way you wnat to take this... the convetion was held at Universal this year... The new tower could be Disney trying to regain the lost clients or????
To put it nicely executives are not staying in a regular room (this convetion has many that attend) and all employyes can stay in the tower rooms if they are available.....
