Why Has Disney World Been Open so Long and Disneyland Remains Closed??

Forgive me, I stopped coming here when month after month passed with Land remaining closed so I have no idea if this has been answered. Does anyone know why World is open but Land is not?? I realize World has more space but can't they limit the space between guests in the Land queues and limit the capacity of the parks? I know Florida's governor has been far more lax than California's but I'm truly baffled as to how one of the most popular and crowded theme parks in the world has been successful in reopening yet Land remains utterly shuttered.

Because California has rules about how we can open. Now, many areas are ignoring the rules and opening (mostly in Northern CA) but Disneyland needs the state to inspect rides to open and CDPH for food venues, so they can't just say "Heck with the mandates, let's open." Florida doesn't have any mandates regarding health, so WDW was able to reopen using their own mandates (ie Masking, social distancing, etc...)

Basically its due to the State Governors and how they manage the Covid restrictions in their respective states. Being mindful of the Dis rules about politics, the Governor of California and the Governor of Florida have very different views about Covid and how to manage it in their states. The way they interpret the CDC guidelines and recommendations is different.

Walt Disney World in Florida has to follow the Governor of Florida's rules and Disneyland in California has to follow the Governor of California's rules.

Because California takes Covid more seriously than Florida. (I'm sure others will phrase it differently, but that's it in a nutshell.)
I wonder how the results are looking when you compare the 2 states. It came at an extremely high price (not just talking dollars).

If you don't like numbers, scroll on by....

If you follow the numbers.....

California has a population of 39,370,000. We have had 54,140 deaths. That is .1375% of the population that has died.

Florida has a population of 21,733,000. They have had 31,619 deaths. That is .1455% of the population.

If you apply the percentage to CA, we would have had an additional 3,140 deaths.

A lot of places here in Southern CA have been ignoring them too

Does that account for the average age in each state, since this is a pandemic that so heavily affects older people?

2 different states, 2 different approaches. I'm generally on the more cautious side regarding this but even I don't understand keeping a predominately outdoor theme park closed.

Same here, our family has followed most CDC guidelines since the beginning and I think it's just silly to keep DL closed this long. This whole thing has felt more like decision making with different motives (which we can't get into here) rather than just safety.

Hopefully this is all sign of the changes coming though.

Different political views in Florida and California. We've been spending our vacation dollars and associated taxes in Florida and looks like that will continue until we are allowed to go back to Disneyland (we are not in CA). We've considered even buying an annual pass to WDW (when they start selling them again). Anyway, I'd say differing political views about what all the scientific and economic data mean to a reopening plan.

my impression is that southern California never really went into full lock down like the San Francisco Bay Area.
also the Bay Area actually went into lock down almost a full week before there was a statewide order.
it doesn't appear that northern California has been ignoring the rules.

north vs south by the numbers

cases per 1 million population data from March 10, 2021

Ventura----------------92,820
Orange----------------82,852
Riverside------------118,061
San Bernardino----132,167

I’ll add this as well, there was not a financial imperative at the state level to reopen things. Florida is more dependent (as a whole) on these types of tax receipts vs California.

California, despite the closures, is in a budget surplus situation whereas Florida is facing down a deficit.

The death rates are comparable as a whole, but know that California is such a large state, when you exclude Los Angeles County from the death data, the Florida death rate was +39% higher than California.

That drove a lot of the decision making.

I don't count the "bay area" in the Northern CA group. The bay area is a VERY small part of NorCal. They are the ONLY area that followed (and still follows) lock down rules. I'm covering more Central Valley of NorCal. Sacramento, San Joaquin, Placer, Stanislaus, Madera, kern, Fresno, Kings, Tulare, Merced counties. Here in Stanislaus, the restaurants never stopped serving inside. We are purple, and I can't think of any restaurant that is following the rules. Our bars are open. Schools are in hybrid mode. Schools were not allowed to play sports, so the coaches set up "club teams" to play instead. And people wonder why we are still purple.

Oh wow! I I didn’t realize that. Will you guys make the metrics to move to red when they get expanded with the 2 million vaccine doses given in the high risk areas? My county is expected to move Sun and it’ll be the first time out of the purple or entire stay at home order. Not much will change for me personally, but it still feels exciting!

ok, I see what you are talking about. unfortunately "up here" northern California has a different connotation. when I saw that I felt the need to point out the differences as far as Covid is concerned.

I could say places you are describing as rural areas but that wouldn't fully encapsulate the places that are not following the rules. the only way to accurately differentiate the areas would probably lead us down a rabbit hole.

We are running a 14 per day average right now, so no where near the under 8 we need.

haha, you are correct. there’s no “Northern California” really. It’s the Bay Area (the nine counties), Sacramento (basically Yolo County east to the foothills, south to Stockton, north to Marysville), Central Valley, Central Coast, Sierras...

...and the State of Jefferson
