Why Dont you do DVC??

There IS life beyond Disney.....and it's absolutely fabulous! Disney is fun, there is no doubt.....but the World awaits those willing to explore it!

Trust me, I know. I've traveled well beyond Disney in this country and around the world, and my children will, too, just not for the next 5-10 years. My parents waited until I was older to travel extensively, and I am doing the same with my children.

We haven't bought DVC because DH is convinced I'll get over my Disney trip obession and he'll get me to go other places on vacation over the next 5-10 years.

Tell him I haven't gotten over my Disney obsession yet and I started going in the 70s!

What I can't understand is why so many people think if you go to Disney you can't go anywhere else. We travel to WDW several times a year but also ski, go rafting, travel to see family, etc. Every trip does not have to be a week long away from work. We get quite a bit accomplished on long weekends.

DH is a 32 year castmember.....NO DVC discounts compare to his.....dining, shopping, free park passes for himself and a small busload of his best friends. Ok, that one is scratched off.

Why would we BUY if it already doesn't work for us? We pay FAR less for hotel rooms at Disney and we can stay ANYWHERE we want.

Why would we even consider limiting ourselves to only 500 destinations. Don't forget, we travel VERY well and often FREE because of careful use of my reward points from business travel and AMEX points. Now explain why I should buy DVC when I can stay in a lovely Crown Plaza in London.....for FREE...with generally an upgrade to concierge because of my travel history.


DVC would make our travel inside AND outside disney properties more expensive.

I agree, for those who cannot work a travel reward package or don't understand how WONDERFUL AMEX points can be, or do not have access to castmember benefits.....DVC is the easy solution for travel.

As I said, DVC just doesn't make ANY $$$$ sense to us.

Oh, we do go on weekend trips/day trips/etc. constantly. But, we only do one large vacation (ie Disney) per year. Right now, it's Disney. Who knows what it'll be in the years to come.

From a CM point of view, I've been a CM since 2005 and we still find DVC to be very beneficial to us. We have used it to travel other places that we do not recieve a CM discount on.

I can't speak from experience on using your AMEX points to stay places for free because we do not use credit cards, but for us, it makes perfect sense.

I'm in now way implying that DVC is for everybody, just stating how the program can work in ways some people don't know about.

6 years ago, minding my own business in line at BTMRR (Gay Days but didn't know it when I booked). I had just politely declined an invitation to attend a party...would make me blush to repeat the description. I turned the other way and said ...... Hello to the tall guy behind me.

3 years later we were married.


I waited 49 years to meet him....and he was worth the wait. (AND.......I married wicked-cool castmember benefits) < like the icing on the cake!

To each their own. Why would anyone have a stake in trying to convince someone who's already bought DVC that they made a bad purchase? You'll end up staying in a substandard resort? What? I've stayed in all the WDW DVC resorts, it's lucky I like them all. They all have their place according to what the purpose of the trip is. F&W festival, I'm at the Beach Club Villas. The space isn't an issue, I stay in studios.

I know I would rather have DVC than free dining. We'll see if I like DVC when I'm 70. If I don't, my niece and nephews will like it.

We seriously looked into DVC and really wanted to buy into it, but then reality set into us, it would cost us more points to stay at POR, which is our and our kids favorite resort, we just couldnt do it. It just wasnt for us. Im not downing it in any way, sure we could afford it, not a major issue, we even go to WDW 1-2 times a year, but we just love POR.

I don't own DVC because I can't afford it right now. I think I'd like to buy in someday, though. We've rented points a bunch in the past and I do prefer to stay in the larger rooms.

AMEX points can be transferred into just about every reward program so we pay EVERTHING with the AMEX and pay it off each month.

The BEST.....when I stay at a business hotel, take advantage of a double=points program....then pay withour AMEX.......that equals TRIPLE points to use!

We flew to Alaska TWICE - round trip - first class simply by transferring AMEX points into our Delta Skymiles account. Ok, we paid taxes.

Never pay for flights to Disney......southwest reward tickets. $5 p/reservation

Pay only taxes for rental cars....our next 9 day trip to see Mickey with a Hertz full-size car will cost $41.


When we were married in Alaska 3 years ago....we were lucky enough to give our guests 2 free nights in Seward before the ship sailed. Travel to Alaska from the east coast and a week of land tours are enough reason to decompress a little before enjoying the cruise.

I have no idea of other castmember's plans....but we have worked the numbers with our DVC friends and they never made $$$ sense.

As I said earlier, there are many happy DVC people (one of our travel friends probably bought the FIRST contract and the first at every resort which opened after) and it's good Disney has given them a way to stay. It just would be too expensive for our travel.....and we LOVE 2353 at Boardwalk and (on no, can't remember the room number - blonde moment) at Beach Club.

You must spend a LOT of money each month on your CC. We put everything on a rewards card (except the rent check ), pay it off monthly, and can, if we're lucky, squeeze out 2 RT tickets/year. Neither DH or I travel for work, so it cuts down on "free rewards" due to expense accounts.

Heck, the homeowners fee for the NYC house is almost $1,000 a month alone!

What really packs the AMEX points are when DH and I travel. I'm gone 2 weeks in 4.....for about 6 months each year. When the company travels to trade shows.....I generally put EVERYTHING for everyone on my AMEX and then just expense it out.

We don't use points for Southwest flights. DH and I travel enough where we earn them the traditional way.

Sometimes when the bills arrive with a busy business travel month.....it's a wee bit heart-stopping.

DH has 8 weeks of vacaton each year so everything helps and we use the rewards very carefully.

Just wondering, I know alot of people on here go Every year or even twice and stay at Deluxe Resorts. Why do you just continue to go without buying dvc?

I am the exact same, go once a year & now have been spoiled to Deluxe resorts. The ONLY reason I don't sign up for the DVC is the yearly dues, from what I have seen, they are very expensive & almost close to the price of my entire vacation. So, if I am going to pay approx $15,000, why do I also have to pay close to $800-$1000 for the yearly dues? Too expensive for me...............

I believe you are insinuating that staying in a hotel room is the same as staying in a villa. Sorry to disappoint you but you are not getting the same experience as a DVC member in a 1/2 Bd or Grand Villa. There is no comparison. Your point is lost then.

I also dont care about having tons of room I spend my time out doing things and I dont need another room for the kids after a day in the park they are fast alseep as soon as we hit the door and so are we.We have stayed in a villa plenty (OKW) because we know someone with a dvc they wish they could get rid off..not impressed enough to spend that kind of money when I like my kids to have a little more culture then spending EVERY single vacation at wdw.

No, the best way to stay is to stay where you want. Many people love OKW and SSR. I have not stayed there yet but very much look forward to trying them out.

You seem to be trying real hard to put DVC down. Anybody else get this feeling?

Why are you so emotionally invested in trying to suggest over and over again to DVC owners that we made poor decisions and are wasting our money.

Seems to me there is more to this...some underlining issue maybe?

you see..I dont CARE about having a washer/dryer and a kitchen...I do not go on vacation to do wash and cook.... I also dont care about having tons of room I spend my time out doing things and I dont need another room for the kids after a day in the park they are fast alseep as soon as we hit the door and so are we.We have stayed in a villa plenty (OKW) because we know someone with a dvc they wish they could get rid off..not impressed enough to spend that kind of money when I like my kids to have a little more culture then spending EVERY single vacation at wdw.

Thank you for that smart piece of advice...I am sure they could not have come up with that on their own giving they are in their 60's and have had it for 20 yrs...and are very tired of going to wdw...
