Why don't people check Snopes before they forward emails?

LOL, Snopes is part of the great conspiracy I guess. I sent a link from CBS too, but I guess the main stream media are part of it too. I'm waiting to see if she replies to my email or not. I don't mind someone having a different opinion, but if I could keep my opinion to myself for 8 years, I think they owe me the same respect:lmao:.

agreed!:thumbsup2

I try to tell people if the emails are wrong.

I have had friends reply to me (like others have mentioned) that Snopes is part of a big ole leftist conspiracy and their owners are liberals and biased, etc. I think that response was to the one that went round about Obama and The National Day of Prayer.

Fine. Believe it. Whatever. :sad2:

I have heard this same thing a lot lately, too! Someone sent me something pretty outrageous, I sent them back the Snopes link showing "false," and the person said that since Snopes had said it was false that was just more proof that it must be true!

Because a lot of people are just idiots. Bill Gates is not going to give you cash for forwarding an email and no one in Nigeria needs you to help them launder money.

If more people put a little thought into email there would be less successful scams and way less people getting phished.

Stupidity is doing the same thing over and over and over and over again while expecting different results!

I thought that was a sign of insanity.

I hate those and I especially hate the ones that you are supposed to pass on to at least ten people and wonderful things will happen. Or, you can hit delete and your life will fall apart.

I have one girlfriend who not only continues to send those out but she does not use bcc when she does so. :headache:

Anyone remember the "forward this email to 10 people and Old Navy/Microsoft/Bath & Body Works/etc will send you a gift certificate for $10"? No matter how many times this woman sent those stupid emails and yet never got her gift certificates

Note to self: first thing tomorrow, dust off and update five-year-old resume; buy interview-worthy apparel; give up plan to live on retail gift certificates and Bill Gates' money and get a REAL job!!!!

Yeah, I'm one to hit "reply all" and forward the url to the snopes page to let EVERYONE know that the email is pure BS.
I HATE it when people do that. It's bad enough getting the first stupid email - but it's even worse when a bunch of total strangers send their outraged responses about how untrue it is. I already figured that out on my own thank you. Just more spam.

One time this guy sent a scathing attack letter in rebuttal to one of those emails. It read like it was addressed to me personally. I did tear him a new one telling him to never send attack letters to me again. I think I scared him as I was very explicit about the implications of his threats. But I only sent my reply to him not the other 100 people on the list.

Delete is your friend. The people that want to believe are going to anyway.

my aunt sent one to my sister, about how wal-mart employees were keying in cash back amounts at the register. My sister, having worked for wal-mart for 10 years, knew other wise. Replied back with, cash back keys are only on the pin pad, and can only be made by the customer.
And my aunt is one to believe anything and everything. I've got close to 200 emails in her "special" folder that are unread. I hate email forwards.

LOL! I got that one yesterday, too! :lmao:

Me, too.

All you can do is shake your head and chuckle at people like that. :)

they don't? Dang! I wrote back and told them if they would just take the $10,000 fee out of the millions I was getting, it would speed up the process and they could just send me the difference (even offered to double the "fee" to give them a bigger cut, again just taken straight out of my "earnings").... still waiting on a verification that it's been done and my check is on the way.

We gave them our father-in-law's name and number. Surely he is the closer next of kin and deserves the money more. :confused3

I hear ya. I LOVE snopes. What a great resource for info.

On the plus side, I finally got my grandmother familiar with snopes and the idea that most forwards are false. On the minus side, she doesn't know how to go to snopes to check them herself, so she sends them ALL to me, asking me to check them. *sighs*

I've even gently pointed out that not one of them (well, the political ones anyway) have EVER been true, and that we see the same ones over and over again about once a year, but I guess she still remains hopeful that one true one will slip in and she can send it to everyone on her mailing list, lol.

My best friend used to forward me that crap. After the 3rd or 4th time using snopes to debunk her bunk (only repied to her, not everyone she sent it to), for some reason I stoped getting those emails from her....

Bet she doesn't forward any more emails to me, LOL.

I was going to say that I bet it takes a "reply all" to get through to her, and one of your family members did that already. :)

I don't mind someone having a different opinion, but if I could keep my opinion to myself for 8 years, I think they owe me the same respect:lmao:.

Exactly. Except that I hate all politicians, and only my husband and I know how I vote, so none of my friends or family know what "side" I'm on politically. People generally guess, but they aren't necessarily correct. So I hated the nasty scathing emails that my liberal friends sent during those 8 years, and I don't like being on the receiving end of the "those people said they'd leave the country for 8 years and they didn't so I'm getting them back by sending this" emails either. I don't want it AT ALL. Which is what I've told everyone. I've actually had to block the email address of stepdad's wife, after 3 "warnings" after several emails to her begging her to stop. And I still got a forward from my stepdad the other day...sure he took out the unknown email addresses, and the only ones in the CC line were what seemed to be family, but it was still rude and unseemly, and I'm still wondering if I should ask about his mental health b/c the kind and gentle man that my mom married (she died, he's remarried to someone else) wouldn't have said what the email said...

Of course all you need to do is google/news about it, and you can see actual news articles. Things showing that he didn't cancel it, that it was held the following year, etc etc etc... I know, wild and crazy! You don't have to just trust snopes, you can do your own nosing around. Amazing!

Now see, the person at fault there was the friend that CC'd everyone. The guy that replied was probably at the end of his rope, NOT believing in deleting when misinformation is being spread, and had just had enough. And he likely decided to reply all b/c his previous reply-to-senders weren't working to make it all stop.

I personally like receiving someone else's truth-telling reply all, because it shows that there are others out there not just accepting every email forward that comes along.

Sometimes I get ones that are true. Like some email about soda bottle bombs, or something like that? It was a "be careful!" email. Well thanks, that was nice. It was a year ago, but thanks. A little late, but thanks. Coulda looked at the DATES on the email you're forwarding, but I appreciate the thought...:headache:

My future mother in law sends this crap ALL the time and it annoys the HECK outta me. I know she means well, but :rolleyes1
