Why don't older women look good with long hair?

I remember my 30th high school reunion last year. Talk about variety. If I didn't know these people I would have sworn there were two generations in that room. Some absolutely looked closer to 60. And, yes, a good many did look more like 40. :

Last week a co-worker was shocked when i admitted my age-she thought I was 10 years youngerr. I have short hair .

I think some people just take better care of themselves-also being 50-100 LBS overweight can greatly age you

I was once sitting next to my SIL at a function(same age-very overweight) when we were 50 and she was holding her grandbaby-an older lady she knew came up to her, admired the baby and asked if *I* was her Daughter-in-Law (and Mother to the baby):rotfl2:
:worship:(Loved that lady);)

Last month, when I told a co-worker my DH and I were celebrating our 10th anniversary this year, she asked if I was a child bride. I laughed and told her I was 37, so no way. She was really surprised and honestly thought I was mid to late 20s.

As far as weight goes, I think chubbier people (not obese, but plump) in general tend to look a bit younger, because they don't get as many wrinkles. Or people with really round faces, like myself. And if you don't smoke and do use sunscreen, your skin usually looks better anyway, and skin is usually a big "tell" as far as age, moreso than hair, IMHO.

And, yes, a good many did look more like 40. The younger looking crew were mostly the women (the guys looked like hell). And if I didn't know the year they had graduated high school I never would have guessed as they truly looked NO different than many of the 40 yo women in my neighborhood. Youthful 50 yo's do not just live in Hollywood. There's a reason that they say "50 is the new 40".

IDK...maybe we are both just misunderstanding one another. Or maybe we truly do have a difference of opinion. Whatever the case....peace:flower3:

When I went to my 25th reunion for the most part I thought the guys looked older than their age, and the women looked younger than their age. Not sure why, except maybe the women went out of their way to look good, and the guys just threw on a suit???

I really didn't pay much attention to the guys.

Was funny that the women who were foxes in High School hadn't aged well, and the women who were maybe more average were the knock outs 30 years later.

Valerie also stated, when she was on Oprah and talking about aging, that her hair is full of extensions. What you see with her in her public pictures is not a true representation of what her hair looks like. I think we'd all look good if we had our hair done professionally and then had hair extensions popped in so it could be glorious.

True. It's really silly to point at ANY celebrity and use them as an example for the rest of us. I was watching an episode of Fashion Police a few months ago and every single woman on the panel was wearing extensions.

What I meant was that clearly in certain parts of the country people tend to take better care of themselves.

Like, Hollywood and Not Hollywood? :confused3

I just cut mine. I think it looks healthier, shinier and *lifts* my face. I felt like I looked so much older with my hair even just down to my shoulders.

I think most of my older clients look younger with shoulder length hair or shorter. JMO.

And I do not care if you are 25 or 55 or 85, style it. Ponytails or straight hair that just hangs does nothing for 99.9% of females.

(Ponytails are fine unless it is what you "do" with your hair. If you style is a ponytail, you need a makeover. ;) )

Oh and while I'm ranting...Use the nozzle on your blowdryers.
I loved your hair longer! I think you look great, short or long, but I did love it longer.

My hair just hangs. I'm bringing Cara with me to TN! ;)

Bren, do you own stock in those nozzles? ;)
and those of you who think an older women has long hair because she is trying to "hang on to her youth"...
put your "armchair" psychology degree back on the dime store shelf where you bought it. you are dead wrong and have no idea what someone else is thinking.

if you don't like long hair on older women, fine. if you are a man that is your wife's problem. if you a woman, it's not your business.
I like this smilie right now:hippie:

(oops, mist be trying to "relive" my youth:rotfl:) how silly, I LOVE being a grandma!!!!!!!
:worship: Ditto!
Age isn't all that hard to estimate. Now THAT is certainly a generalization.
I guess I just don't spend much time trying to determine people's ages. :confused3 But I do recall DD's nursery school teacher announcing she was pregnant (had a son and daughter in their teens) and I had thought she was about 60. Turns out she was in her 40s. Short hair, too.
So maybe it's not a desperate grasp at youth as some posters seem to think it must be. Maybe the older woman you see with longer hair just never heard that particular piece of "advice", and just wears her hair the way she likes it.
:thumbsup2

Approaching 50 here with long hair.

I have noticed a lot of women cut their hair as they age and I never really understood why. I had no idea there was an acceptable/unacceptable age to have hair past your shoulder blades.

I plan on having long hair until the day I die. Or until it all falls out, lol.

I , and my husband, feel the same way. my husband says, he has NO idea why, when women pass age 40, 45, or 50, they have to either have an old fashioned "hair-DO"... or look like a d y k e . sorry , his words.

but I DO know hubby is glad I dont spend $$$ at the salon every month or two. and I'm sure my hair could look nicer than it does, if I went for a trim every month.. I choose to save my money for either disney or my grandkids, and he actually likes my long, wavy hair.

so everyone in my family is happy. hubby loves my long, wavy hair. I am not looking to please any other guy, or I don't care what any other women think. I spend less money. I kinda like the little bit of gray at the temples, I DO feel like an old hippie, and guess what.. I LOVE it!:hippie:

I am in my late 50's and have my hair a little below my shoulders. Numerous strangers think my twin daughters and myself are sisters, not mother/daughters. I wear it straight, I pull it back in a ponytail and I add volume with a big brush. Not all women lose hair. Mine is as thick as it has always been. I don't even have to color my hair.

Why should women cut their hair because they have reached a certain age? Please don't judge my hairstyle and I won't judge yours.

i wear my hair long for about 4 years at a time.

then i get it cut.
then i let it grow out again.
my hair does grow fast.

i have been donating to the cancer society for 'Locks of Love' for many years.

the year before last, i had it cut to just above the shoulders and donated 25 inches.

i think all that is required is 7 or 10 inches for donating.

until i started to read this thread, i never gave it a second thought on what age i would stop donating my hair.

Your hair does NOT.
I look at your hair on FB everyday and it does not just "hang."

Thanks for the compliment on the hair. ;)

Good thing I do not own stock in nozzles...it'd be down.

But look at your hair...it is styled. :thumbsup2 Longer and styled. It looks great and you look great. But I guarantee you if it was just hanging down with no style whatsoever, you'd look much different.

My hair is about 4 inches past my shoulders. I am 37.

I was going to grow it until May, then get a body wave to give it some "oomph", as I have fine, thin hair.

However, I noticed a split end the other day and freaked out. I blame it on not getting a haircut for a year, and using hair dye (I am going gray quicker than I want to).

I am getting it cut today, same style as Katy Perry's new haircut. A nice, edgy bob.

I can't wait! It will take care of my split ends and give me some style.

:thumbsup2
