Why don't older women look good with long hair?

Or do you think they do? By long I mean below the shoulders. And by older, well, let's say 50 and up. I suppose it depends on what age a woman looks and how it's styled.

I think it matters how their face is shaped/how it flatters their face and how it is done regardless of age. I don't believe that after a certain age your hair can't be a certain length if you have nice hair that is styled in a manner than suits your face.

As women age their hair thins and dries out so very often longer hair looks unhealthy. I also find that it looks (sometimes) like a bit of a desperate grasp at youth.

I don't think it looks good either. I can't say that I've seen an older woman with longer hair that I ever thought it looked good. As the other poster pointed out, as you age your hair loses its luster and depth of color. I think shoulder level, just below shoulder level, can be pulled off but the hair should be nicely styled and maintained.

Where I work, we have several woman over 50 (heck, over 40) with 80s hair going straight down past the middle of their back and it's pretty hideous.

I don't understand why it seems like they all cut it off.

If the hair is healthy--I think it looks fine.:confused3 The women I see with cropped hair aren't all suffering from thinning hair.

I go back and forth with mine. I kinda like it shorter as I get older.

When I was in college, I worked in a grocery store in a well to do beach town in Southern CA. We had a regular customer that I would see often who was GORGEOUS. She was probably in her mid 60s, and had grey hair just past her shoulders. She always looked...elegant. I know most older women, especially if their hair is grey, can't "pull off" longer hair--but she sure could!:thumbsup2

I think people should keep their hair however they want. I have never understood the you hit a certain age and should cut your short way of thinking. :confused3

:rotfl: But I bet you look good!!

I'm over 50 also and when I was younger I used to have to curl my hair with those giant purple curlers & sit under the hair dryer for an hour. And don't dare even whisper the words "damp", "misty" or "rain" or my hair would curl & frizz right up. So in my early-mid 40's I finally started keeping it above my shoulders. Now that I have those 2 wonderful, amazing tools - blow dryer & flat iron, I don't think I'd look good with long hair. Most of the women I've seen with long hair who appear to be my age or older - and I really haven't seen that many, just don't look right. One woman I work with has very long, beautiful healthy hair but, I don't know, it just doesn't go with her age.

Maybe it's psychological, equating long hair with youth. Up until recently, I always looked younger than my age (I'm starting to look a little tired & haggard now) but I still didn't think I'd look good. Anyway, my hair grows so slow, I'll shrink a couple of inches before it has a chance to get long.

See, I told you you probably look good. Hey wait a minute, I think I know you, is your last name Addams?

Hey, I saw your edited post, where'd you get that pic of me. See, I told you I was starting to look tired & haggard.

I saw a recent pic of Hilary Clinton with her long hair and she looks dreadful
:sad2:

I'm 45 (and I look it) and I worry about "writing checks with my hair that my face can't cash"
In other words I feel like my hair looks really youthful when I wear it down (It is curly and right above the shoulders right now) from behind. I feel like people think they are looking at a young woman -or even a girl (I am little) and then I turn around and they see my face and think -Oh she is old!
So most of the time I wear it pulled up in some way
Maybe I am overthinking it LOL

I refuse to cut my hair!:lmao: I'm 55 and like it long! But I do agree that some women do NOT look good in it, I guess it depends on how you wear it. :confused3

Yikes! I hate this topic. :scared1: (My long hair sticking straight up!)

I think it depends on the person and the hair, and in the end, it depends on how that person likes it. Having said that...I'm over 50 and have hair about 3 inches below my shoulder, and it's thick. (My mother and her sisters had/have extremely thin hair, and haven't been able to have long hair since their 20s).

Personally, for me, I like it a little shorter, but when I had it colored and Keratin-treated last week, my DD was in labor  and I told my hairdresser to skip the haircut to hurry things along. And with it straighter, it does look longer than I expected. Next color appt, I'll get it cut. I know women my age with longer hair who look great and others who don't, IMHO. But it's not really about their age. There are women of all ages who don't look good with the style/length they've chosen (and I may be one of them, in some peoples opinion. :confused3)

I'm 56 and my hair is 3-4 inches past the top of my shoulders. My hair is so thick that I can not pull it back into a pony tail. In fact, after I lost my hair from chemo and it grew back, it looks healthier than it has my entire life because it's no longer curly or frizzy.

I eat healthy, exercise daily and dress professionally in age appropriate clothing. I have my hair cut, colored and deep conditioned every 4th Wednesday and I never miss.

I'm not sure how I'd feel if anyone had the nerve to tell me that because I'm 56, I automatically fall into the category of "must wear short hair or look like crap".

Chin length to just skimming the shoulders is fine. Anything mid-back and longer just looks wrong in an older woman. To me, it makes a woman look dated and trying to hang onto her youth which has long-ago departed. Honestly I only know one woman who has longish hair and as beautiful as she is and as beautiful as her hair still is, she looks really dated. All the other woman I see with long hair, it generally looks dry, brittle, and worn out.

What these ladies don't realize is how much more youthful and better they'll look if they just get it updated and cut.
