We are talking about getting a new car today. Ok well, not a new car but new to us. We currently have an 07 Escape that is just small. Once the kids and dog are in there we literally have 0 room, we can't go to my MIL's house without crap piled on my lap and under my feet. I have to sit cross legged in the car! And, it's DH's car and he doesn't really like it.

Here is what we are considering...

07 Pilot w/ 32k miles on it - getting a really good deal on it. It's larger with the 3rd row.

--Trading in our Escape, putting about 4,000 down and our payment would go from $130/month to about $200/month.

We can do this but stuff like this just makes me totally sick to my stomach. We will still have savings and will still be able to put money into retirement and savings every month. I thought if anyone could understand how I'm feeling it would be my budget board friends.

As an added bonus, it would really make the drive to DL much easier on the whole family.

Please make me feel better!

You're not alone. Any major purchase is a big change and a big risk for people. While I was thrilled to have a second vehicle, the purchase itself was a nauseating experience for me. If you're budget can handle the increase it's okay to relax:goodvibes Enjoy you're new Pilot. With three kids and a fourth on the way, even our van is starting to feel too small.

This is for you. Pretty sure you don't want to hear my opinion though.

Big purchases are usually pretty hard. Two things that might ease your mind.

1. Your buying a used Honda. You let someone else take the hit on the depreciation and will save a lot of money for a better, roomier car.

2. You said you can afford it and will continue to save for your future.

It's hard, I know. We're in the market for a "new" car, and even though we will be paying cash for a used one, I still hate it. I think it's because I really hoped my car would work better and last a little longer than it has (2000 Ford Focus with countless problems.) It's a bit disappointing but it's a necessary change. Just think how much more comfortable you'll be.

OP: Thankfully you can afford to do it and are not in "dire" position like so many others out there. Good for you!! :thumbsup2

The Honda PILOT is amazing, I got one myself about 7 mos (07 also) ago and LOVE it, got the full leather, roof, navigation, cargo pkg, runners, full tint, window "thingies" I have no idea what they are called :lmao: and it had 26K on it.....got a GREAT deal, or so we think :lmao:
I actually bought the extend FULL warranty cause we got that for dealer cost (a HUGE savings cause dh knew dealership manager). I do not put many miles on, way under yearly average, so the vehicle should last. Honda's are GREAT at keeping value unlike many others. They are very sound vehicles as well. We also have the CRv (first year it rolled out, over 100K on it and doing amazing...:)
I LOVE my PILOT and love when those seats heat up the tushie on these COLD days here in NE! When you "fill it up" it does add up, but honestly the price of gas "is what it is" so I try and not stress over it. I also do not totally fill up very often..:rotfl2:..

Wishing you luck and safe motoring:wizard:

While on a cruise my Dh wanted to buy me a $1900 ring. While I loved it. I felt sick to my stomach, shaking and needed to sit down because I was going to pass out. I thought of how many other things we could to with the money. He thought I was crazy.

He ended up going back and buying for me. I love it and do not regret buying it.
We paid off the credit card from saving when we got home.
When I took it to be appraised they said I got a realy good deal. appraised for $5600. I wear it every day since it replaced my wedding set.

So, I totally understand feeling sick over spending money.

Your vechile purchase sounds like it will greatly benefit your famiy with more room.

You will love a Honda. I have a 2002 Honda CRV that just turned over 200,000 miles and is still going strong. Very little upkeep. Find a good independent Honda garage that doesn't try to push maintenance on you unless it really needs done. Once the brakes were squeeking so I went to a place specializing in brakes. They said the brakes were OK but tried to tell me I needed new shocks all around. My Honda guy said no, they were just fine as is. I mainly just change the oil on schedule and replace the tires as needed. The Pilot should last you for a long, long time.

My stomach turns for days when I have to spend a chunk of money. I totally get it. Sometimes we do have to buy things though. I try to think in terms of how it will affect my quality of life. It sounds like this purchase could really increase your quality of life so for me that makes it a worthwhile purchase. Fitting everyone in the car is a big deal. A bigger car is on my list too. But 1st I think I'll save up for a new water heater. I'm getting sick of boiling water on the stove for a bath becasue I didn't think ahead and ran the dishwasher after dinner on "bath night" :rotfl: Talk about improving my quality of life!;)

Could you get a slightly older car? Maybe an '06 vs. an '07? That would be a bit less costly, I would think. I'm not a great person to talk to about buying slightly used cars...my "new" car is a '97. :)

I think you're suffering from something normal and you shouldn't worry too much about it. I mean listen to your gut but if you can afford it easily then get it. I know all about needing more room, I've got kids and dogs....LOL I'm glad that I have my minivan most days, until I see the Charger, Challenger, Mustang or Camaro fly past me, but then I remind myself how miserable we would be crammed into that little car and I'm not sad for long. :)

Thanks, I decided to make it our family motto. I figured it's a good rule to live by.

Thank you guys, I knew you would understand.

This is seriously a good deal. They just dropped it by $5000 because it's been sitting on the lot for 2 months. I wasn't seeing any 2006 models for less than what we are paying.

I've had three Hondas, a Prelude that we sold to a friend at 230,000 (more like gave w/ a he felt guilty so gave us "something" :) ). He then gave it to someone at 380,000. I swear I still see that thing driving around town, but of course no way to know it is the same.

And a Honda Accord wagon, that I traded in at 290,000 for a Civic. I wish I still had the Civic but I sold it because my mom gave me her car which was in great shape. Kind of too good to pass up.

If you are concerned about the budget, don't forget to check with your insurance to see if it will change the premiums any.

First of all...you will LOVE the Pilot...I'm still loving my 2003 Pilot and it has 98,000 miles on it...this from a family that traded cars every few years before the Pilot...I just couldn't see a reason to get rid of it!

At the same time...I totally get what you are saying...because we are now considering a new Pilot! :) We think at this point it is time to upgrade because we drive on all of our vacations...typically two a year of over 2000 miles each...and we don't want to risk car trouble on a long trip. Knock on wood, we have not had ANY problems with our Pilot...so I'm having a hard time considering anything else! But the thought of having a car payment after years without one is making me sweat!

Good luck!

I think we are all in the same boat but it can't be a bad thing to take a step back and think 'can i really afford this?' if the answer is yes and it is really needed and will improve the quality of your family life then go for it...

Apart from the other reasons...I don't really get this as a good reason to get a new car: "crap piled on my lap and under my feet. I have to sit cross legged in the car!"

Seems that's a "clean the car" issue, and it's one that's likely to follow you to the Pilot, if it's a habit to keep so much stuff in your car.

Is the Escape really that small????

OMG I thought I was the only one who went through these emotions when making a big purchase. DH bought me diamond earing for our 10 yr anniversary on June 2009 I had him take them back because I was a nervous wreck over it. Plus the carat size was small and very milky looking. I still am looking for earring but looking for just the right price and clarity.

OP I think we get so worked up over big purchases because we work hard for our money. Plus this is a large chuck of money and we are very cautious about how we spend it. Were as other people don't think twice about what the cost is they just spend spend spend. Where as we are the savers and don't want to let go of our money. We are always thinking of the what ifs and shoulda coulda's.
Sounds like you are making the right decision. You said you needed a bigger vehicle. So as your family continues to grow up you will need that extra space and you will be happy that you decided to get a bigger vehicle.

You will not regret it, the Pilot's are SO nice. The car payment isn't that bad, mine is $505/month!

Yes, it is that small. If you have more than one kid and have to pack it for a trip I can see having to sit cross legged on top of stuff. I think that is what she is talking about rather than day to day clutter. I drive an '05 Kia Spectra, so I can totally get that. We have only Me, DH and DD6 and are still stuffed to the gills traveling anywhere in it. We too are considering a "new" used car, but i want to wait another year if possible so that we can put more down on it.

Big purchases are always nerve wracking. I just did what you did, but it was because of a car accident.

How often do you really need a bigger car? In the normal scheme of things, when would you replace it?

You can always consider renting a van for trips. With good deal scouting and planning ahead, I'd bet that you can find good enough deals - and keep the mileage off your primary vehicles.
