Why does my EXIF get erased?

Whenever I edit my pictures with Picasa and then save them for uploading onto SmugMug, my EXIF data is no longer viewable. Is this normal?

If so - is there a photo editing program that does not cause this to happen? My birthday is on Friday and I asked for Photoshop Elements 6, but just in case I don't get it and keep on having to use Picasa, I would like to know.

It's a real bummer when I like how a picture came out (on the rare occassion I have used Manual Mode) and when I go to figure out what I did right...I can't see it.

Thanks!
Ann

I'm using Picasa 3 Beta and just tested and it doesn't wipe EXIF data.. maybe upgrade to v3?

IrfanView (also free) doesn't strip exif (unless you tell it to) and is extremely powerful, and small and fast to boot.

In my program (PSP) if you right click on the image and go to properties a box pops up with the data and boxes to check if you want to keep the EXIF data or not. Maybe try that? Also, do you "save as" or do you use "save?" Seems I read somewhere that if you "save" rather then "save as" it will wipe it out. Not sure about that though.

"Save as" can, depending on the settings (and program), but if you use Photoshop (any version) and select "Save for web", it wipes it for sure, including any imbedded thumbnail.

Not really relevant to your question, but just a FYI Photoshop Element 7 comes out today.

Thanks for that info. For the life of me I could not figure out how to get PSP to preserve the EXIF data. I'll have to try that.

Ann, its a smugmug thing.

They have it set up so that only the original size file has the EXIF embedded into the image. I've asked them about it and they say it has to do with space or bandwidth or something like that. Sharing the Original size on a board like this is impossible though.

I too find it quite annoying, and its about the only thing I don't like about smugmug.

Some people have resized their images to the 800x600 size before uploading to smugmug. Doing this then choosing the Original size to share will keep the EXIF data intact. Gdad does this a lot. I haven't gotten around to doing it that way. Not sure if I will.

Its pretty easy to copy and paste the EXIF data from smugmug though if people do want to see it.

If your using a save for web feature it will strip the exif data because it makes the file smaller.

Ann......Kyle is absolutely right about smugmug doing the stripping.

However, in looking at your galleries, I notice that although 3 of them do have the EXIF info for each image, the Philly Zoo gallery does not. I also noticed that the filenames in the zoo gallery have an extension of ".nef.jpg." Looks like they somehow got saved wrong with 2 extensions. Nice pictures in your galleries, btw! :thumbsup2

Hmmm....nef.jpg. huh? That's really odd. They WERE my first images that I shot in RAW and tried to convert to jpeg after editing...maybe something happened along the way that screwed it up. They are still viewable, so I guess it can't be that bad, but I'll have to look into it so I don't do the same thing next time.

Thanks for the kudos on the pictures, I'm definitely trying to learn as much as possible. I have been slowly easing my way into shooting a small portion of pictures each outing in one of the more "manual" modes...whether it be A, S or M. Shooting RAW was definitely...a lot easier than I thought. I don't know if I just stink at editing or what, but it didn't seem any different than editing my jpgs :confused3

Still lots to learn but having so much fun in the meantime!

What software are you using to convert from RAW to JPEG?

The software that came with the camera, ViewNX. I took the pix off of my memory card, adjusted some white balance in ViewNx and then selected the "Convert" button on the top of the screen. I selected "JPEG" from the drop-down list (TIFFs were also listed) and pressed start.

I didn't think I had done anything out of order at the time, but I guess now I did.

Another question. NostalgicDad had said that my SmugMug galleries (all but the zoo) were displaying EXIF, however when I went into the gallery with pictures of a friend's daughter I took I couldn't get the EXIF to show up. I had downloaded Opanda a while ago. I right clicked, selected the "View EXIF" or whatever on the drop-down menu and a pop-up reading "No exif data available" came up. :confused3 I can view everyone else's EXIF fine using the Opanda, but can't see my own.

Ann, if you hover over your picture in smugmug, you will see a popup bar that has an icon for "photo info". Click on that, and you will see the EXIF data. When you right click on the image, you're still not looking at the original and won't see the data.

Thanks!!! Problem solved! Once I try to fix the file extensions for the pix in the zoo album, I'll see if that corrects the problems I am having viewing the EXIF.
