Why does joining a gym so often feel like a slimy process?

This really makes me appreciate our locally owned gym. The pricing is the pricing, and aside from their grand opening special to draw an initial member base they don't run specials or limited time offers. There's no hard-sell sales pitch, and anyone can go to the website to see the different pricing options and what they include (single location, all three locations, "ultimate" membership that includes childcare and tanning).

It is expensive but if you have kids it works out great. Free childwatch, lots of classes for kids, including swim lessons, etc. Our membership is worth every penny!

I've also heard good things about American Family Fitness. 20 yrs ago, I belonged to Gold's Gym---loved them, no pressure, no ripoff.

Our Y charges to watch kids.... I think $2 per child with a 2 hour limit.... I have 2 kids.... so it could be as much as $8 every time I take them to the YMCA.

Ours is free while working out. They also do events like "Parents Night Out" which does cost, but you can drop the kids off and they get to play in the childwatch center and watch a movie. I keep forgetting about it, but I may have to try it out one time.
