Why does anyone go to DTD?

I got to Disney at least once a month and we always go to DTD. There is so much to do and see there. And you don't even HAVE to spend money.

My sister really wants to go this year, so I'll give it another try. When I went in 2006 on my solo trip, I found it a long way to go for the same merchandise they had in the parks, although I *did* enjoy my meal at Portobello's a lot.

I go for Wolfgang Puck express, WOD, Ghiradelli, and it's something to do at night if you don't feel like doing a park or the parks close early. When I worked at Disney I would go there all the time, for the movies and if we just wanted to get together and had nothing else to do.. and now they have Spitsville!!

Forgive me for having an opinion. I enjoy DTD, it's just gone down in recent years. I eat a few meals a trip there, but it is basically an outdoor shopping mall. You can walk around, bored, and not pay, or pay and do whatever. It just isn't what it used to be, though I commend the effort that's been put in, in the past year. I know there's no way around paying for stuff, and I don't mind paying (guess I didn't phrase things well), but it seems like there are an awful lot of people who go and sit around doing nothing. This wouldn't be bad, but finding a seat to eat ice cream or even a place to stand without traffic is very difficult. So I like DTD, but it's not a place to spend a day at for me, I only ever go to eat or shop real quick or see a movie when it's raining. My response to the other poster was in regards to expenditure, not what there is to offer.

I go to DTD for food. It's the closest you can get on property (besides some of the upscale restaurants) to a different dining experience than at most of the other places. Dinner and Drinks with somewhat of a nighttime atmosphere can be more fun than a group of adults having a night at Ohana...

I love going to DTD!! We enjoy the shops and food. Our favorite stores are the Christmas Store, World of Disney, Lego, Tren-D & the Once Upon a Toy! For food they have WPE, EOS, Ghirardelli, T-Rex and Rainforest Cafe.

Thank you for realizing DTD is a disaster now and having them transform it into Disney Springs I want the power you have to fix some parks BTW I'm just messing with you I couldn't resist and I know what you were trying to say

I like DTD and I usually go to DTD a couple times each trip for lunch/dinner and shopping. If were taking it easy at the resort during the day I'll drive down to get lunch at EOS. I won't take Disney transportation to DTD unless I have to since I can be there in half the time driving myself(buses take a long route). A relaxing night with dinner WPE, EOS, Portobellos, Rain or T-Rex(if kids are with us) then shopping or a movie is a nice break from the parks on a long trip.

if on the dining plan, wolfgang puck express is a great use of a CS credit. if not Earl of sandwich is a cheaper CS. we often go to use the Planet Hollywoood voucher you get with a package.
and THEN!!!!(if we are there without a car) we walk across the street to the Hess and buy some beer (maybe chips and soda).. yes, they let you take it on the bus. we buy a 12 pack or 18 pack and we have beer in the room!!

Disagree with OP

My family DEMANDS 1 day or night at DTD, but then again we do not shop at any of the parks. We shop only one day at DTD near the end of our trip.

Goofy Candy- love to get special treats

Christmas shop- tradition to ge one ornament every trip, you can not beat the selection!

Once Upon A Toy- love it

Picture Ops! We always get a picture in the Christmas scene, and with pooh and tigger

World of Disney!

Arribo Bros! this is my fave, always get a special pair of earings here.

Earl of Sandwich- affordable for a large family

This year, we are considering:
Splitsville, Movie&Dine, Flights of Wonder or even renting a boat for an hour

The World of Disney store carries almost any item you've seen in the 3 parks (not EPCOT countries or resorts) and since I get a discount with with AP or VISA, it's so nice to do all the shopping at once! We also like to stroll around and look at all the neat stores; LEGO sculptures, etc. My personal favorite is the art store just inside the entry. I could spend hours looking at the beautiful forms used to bring the characters to life

Not a big fan of DTD as a "destination". We go there when we have specific shopping to do, or just some time to kill. Even then, we are only there 60-90 minutes. An exception to that would be if we are going there to dine.

We like it especially on our first afternoon as a chance to get our first "wave" of being "at WDW" without yet visiting a park. We love to grab a sandwich at Earl of Sandwich, and we'll inevitably visit Ghirardelli's and probably snag a pretzel. We generally enjoy the broader selection of Disney goodies at places like World of Disney than in the park-specific shops, and if nothing else, its a nice place to walk around leisurely and take in an hour or two if you're not planning a park visit on a given afternoon or evening.

Don't pretend its some big destination thing, just a fun "side visit" that's close to the hotel and, at least for us, the first hint you're "back" at WDW.

Downtown Disney has never felt all that "Disney-like" to me. Now, I'll admit each member of our family has a number of shops and/or restaurants there that we like. I just don't care for the chaos of the crowds that we seem to run in to when we go there. I know it's to be expected and that we could probably find less busy times to go, but it just feels too commercial and doesn't seem to capture the essence of Disney.

That's exactly right everyone is entitled to their own opinion but DTD is going to be going through a massive overhaul so that could also change some opinions. I believe that it's a fun place to hang out shop and eat I don't go their to do activities like disney quest.
