Why do you wear a mask?

I know that for most people, multiple responses will apply. But if you had to pick just one, most important reason why you wear a mask, what would it be?

I rarely go out but when I do I wear a mask for myself because I am immunocompromised.

I was wearing masks in a lot of places before the pandemic so now I just wear them everywhere. It’s not a big deal to me. Besides, with the increased use of hand sanitizer, the mask have become more of a necessity since I react to airborne alcohol.

Ditto. Me wearing my mask and you wearing your mask is the best we can do if we have to be close to one another. So I would've made more than 1 choice.

i answered for direct personal protection, as in to protect myself.
My second reason is because it's required by law.
But i would still wear one indoors even if it weren't required.
But outdoors, i wouldn't but i have to because of the law.

I voted Other as all of these apply to me

• Required by law / businesses
• For direct personal protection
• For indirect protection of myself / my loved ones (ie. "if everyone does it we are all protected")
• to protect other people (strangers / society at large)

Single choice was very deliberate. Like I said, I know that almost everyone has multiple reasons, but that wasn't what I was interested in for this poll.

You are, of course, welcome to list all your various reasons in a post, or there's always the ubiquitous "other" if you really can't choose a single most important reason. Or just choose not to vote.

For my own protection first and foremost.

It is required by state and local “law” but I don’t trust others to follow that nor to not gather, go to parties etc.

My husband found them helpful when cutting grass and doing other yard work to keep dust out of his mouth.

But what does that mean, to you? Why is it the "right thing" to do? The answer is almost certainly different for different people. To name a few (non-exhaustive) possibilities:

• to protect the general population
• because the law requires it
• because other people think it's what everyone should be doing

And maybe the answer is "all of the above", but what I really wanted to see was what people think is most important, for them.
