Why do you think the Princess and the Frog underperformed?

The Orlando Sentinel's website today has a blog about why the movie underperformed. They speculate that it was too 'retro' for blacks and too 'black' for white audiences. I HOPE people aren't so racially motivated?!?!

They also wondered if it was the marketing, and I have to say, that's my vote. We finally got around to watching it this weekend and I don't think the marketing was nearly as charming as the film.

I thought when the princess became a frog the frog was drawn too skinny. Seriously, there is so much pressure to be thin...now the frogs have to be thin too...why not just draw her as a normal healthy looking frog? I know that sounds ridiculous but I'm actually serious.

Admittedly, my kids are teens now . . . but it just didn't appeal to any of us. I can't put a finger on WHY. Disney hasn't had a real blockbuster lately. What was last? WalE? (I'm probably spelling that wrong.) We didn't love that either.

I didn't go because it looked boring and DD thought it looked too babyish. Nothing about the trailers wowed me. It had nothing to do with it's supposed level of "blackness," it just didn't look good.

We will rent it because it's a Disney movie, but it didn't look worth spending the $$ to see it in the theaters.

It didn't really appeal to us either, and we have 9 and 4 yo boys. No real interest in seeing it unfortunately.

I'm going to go with marketing. I had absolutely no desire to see this movie based on the marketing and hype. We did go and took DD and it was one of the best disney movies I have seen in a while. It was fantastic and I went out this past Tuesday morning at about 10am and bought it. And we've watched it at least twice since then.

That's good to hear, we will definitely rent it and give it a shot.

Well, for us it was because we have two small boys (2 and 3) who have no interest in seeing a Princess movie :rotfl: and I couldn't convince DH to go see it either. But I'm sure, as with all Disney movies, we'll buy it on DVD.

It was the marketing. The harsh reality is that things marketed to young girls are not going to get the full monty.

The princess crowd is a select audience and the studio is not going to be able to market this to a general crowd. So it gets less attention.

Looking at it from a business angle, I don't blame them.

My dd is too old for it, but I wanted to see it :)

My whole famly LOVED it! Even my too cool 16 year old son! I hope Tiana becomes a princess classic.

I am going to rent it, and if I like it, I will add it to my Disney collection. My sister took her son (4) and daughter (6) to the movies and they both loved it. My DS didn't want to go. He is getting at the age, where "that's a girl movie".

I guess for me, it looks dated, technology wise. I think the Pixar movies just look better.

does anyone think they disliked it because of the quality of the animation? Just asking as they were let go after finishing the movie, and I know contract work...but had it done better at the box office and story-wise...a few more people would be employed and maybe 2-D would have a resurrection. I know that was the hope for The Frog Princess, but sadly it didn't work out that way

I really think it was the marketing. I had pretty much zero interest in seeing it when it first came out. But, DF and I went and saw it at the dollar theater and I LOVED it. DF said it was good "for a princess movie". I feel like the previews on TV weren't nearly as cute as the movie was.

We saw it and loved it. Bought the Blu-Ray too and also got one for our niece and nephew.

I think it would've done much better if it was computer generated animation instead of hand drawn.

We didn't go to see it because of the marketing- the "vodoo" aspect was played up and my kids were afraid to see it!
I bought it though this week and we watched it at home and we all loved it! It's no Beaty and the Beast- but it was a nice movie.

I took my dd, 2, and ds, 7 at the time to see it when it came out, and we all loved it. We've already bought it on dvd and have watched it twice so far. I thought it was really good, and good to see a more "classic" Disney movie.

I didn't see it in the theatre, only because I didn't have time with my school and work schedule. But the day it was released, I bought the Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy bundle from Sam's Club. I watched it with DS13 that night and we both enjoyed it. I'm sure I enjoyed it more than DS13, but I didn't hear him complaining that he didn't like it! :thumbsup2
