Our 1st trip to WDW we took my grandmother, and I split the resorts for location and convenience...so I could impress everyone with all the bells and whistles I was gonna pack into the trip.
By staying at the GF the first few days, we could take a cute little boat to MK, monorail to Poly for the Luau, watch Electric water pageant from the GF dock, and sit outside our rooms to watch the MK fireworks in the evenings. (((hop))) The second leg of the trip, staying at the Yacht Club, it was very quick to get to the Christmas tour, and DH who loves water parks could play in Stormalong Bay while we took the tour, (yup, it was in the hot, humid 90's at WDW in Dec. 2000), plus-with all the dining options and friendship launches at YC/BC/BW it made it a lot easier for us to keep the walking to a level amenable to a lady in her late 70s.
2nd trip, I was offered a "manager's special" while I was trying to extend my reservation at CBR, and ended up extending it over to AKL. Hey, hey!
After that, we decided to *always* resort hop, but, unfortunately the only other trips we managed were just quick, 4-day weekends, so it was more efficient to stay in one place. (even...offsite! gasp

)
And really, its no trouble at all to jump from resort to resort as long as you don't have a tonnage of packing. Bell services will pick up your bags from your room, send it to the next resort. You can just head out for b'fast, hit some attractions, and just swing by your new resort whenever you feel like taking some down time and check in.
So I'd say, resort hop for the fun of it. Because all the resorts are cool, and each has its own personality and its own intrinsic perks.
