Inspired by the thread on vacation destinations you would never choose again--a few people mentioned cruising. Tell me why you hate to cruise!

DH & I have never been on a cruise (DH gets seasick and is very reluctant). I have friends who adore cruising and friends who say they "couldn't wait to get off the boat." I'm afraid I would fall into the latter camp--am I going to be bored stiff with nothing to do except eat and go to napkin-folding and vegetable-carving seminars?? I don't do pools, so that's out.

Some work buddies at a previous job almost talked me into cruising with them (all girls, no DHs or boyfriends) until I realized it would mean sharing a cabin--that's way too much togetherness for me!

There's so much more to cruising than napkin folding. What do you like to do? Perhaps you would be suited to a cruise that has no (or only 1) sea day -- but a lot of island stops.

Personally, I love to cruise -- I've been on 5 so far. I love the feeling of total relaxation. You can do as much or as little as you want to. I love to just sit by the pool (have not gone IN the pool yet) and read and listen to the band that plays by the pool. I did the towel animal "class". I haven't done bingo.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a vacation.

BTW, my mom is extremely claustrophobic and my dad gets motion sickness pretty easily and they both LOVE to cruise. They don't drink, don't do the sun and like to play bingo...pretty much the opposite of me, yet we all love to cruise.

I've never been on a cruise, I started a thread asking questions about cruises, so I'd be interested to see why people don't like cruises.

I've only been on one cruise....I wouldnt miss never doing it again. (Though, only recently, I thought MAYBE we'd have to give the Disney one a try... the kids might really like it...)

I DID feel bored and quickly! The pools were either for soaking, for kids, or WAY to crowded to really swim. I dont gamble - so one quick look around the casino was plenty. Then what....we ate, and ate, and ate.....

The Broadway type show was ok - but once is enough, ofcourse. Then what?

I went to the gym - once a day - but thats an hour...max.

Only time I was really happy (besides eating!) was when we went ashore.... hmmmmm..... so this just made me think why not STAY ashore?!

I'm not an athelete , by any means, but I just really like GOING places, moving around, walking around to see things etc. (Walking around the deck is not the same...)

You'll find TONS here who love it but thought hearing somewho felt ho-hum about it would be good. I think the "try a one day trip" suggestion makes perfect sense for you and you Dh. Goodluck!!!!

I have really given this some thought and I can't come up with one single reason why I hate to cruise. I really love cruising. First of all, I can't think of one island in the Carribean where I would want to spend more than three days on. They are nice but there isn't enough to keep me entertained for more than that. Its wonderful waking up somewhere different every morning. I love getting on a ship, the decor, the attentiveness of the crew members, having a wonderful buffet and then going to the cabin and finding my luggage waiting for us. I have never had a mediocre meal on a cruise ship. All of our meals have been very good. Some have been outstanding. The entertainment is free, varied and plentiful. Drinks are priced very reasonably, and even days at sea, pool side is fun, relaxing and as busy or as quiet as you would like. I love Celebrity cruise lines; not just for the cuisine which is top notch but I love the fact that they have a dining area off of the back of the ship. I love having breakfas while we are seeing the island come into view and docking. My favorite cruise lines are Celebrity and Royal Carribean, in that order. I wasn't thrilled with my NCL cruise but that was a long time ago and maybe things have changed. We were booked on Princess for January but I had to cancel due to shoulder surgery. Which reminds me I need to cancel my airfare with Delta.

I've stopped long ago trying to convince someone to love WDW or cruising. Bottom line, we're all different.

If you don't enjoy relaxing, cruising probably won't be for you. Of course there are things to do, but napkin folding isn't that much of an exageration. When you're on board, you must like to relax, eat, use the casino, dance and/or party at night. Fortunately, I enjoy all of the above. If you don't like ANY of those things, you may not enjoy cruising.

Now, ports of call are different. Plenty of excursions that offer a wide variety for almost any interest. So it is true, if you want more to do choose an itinerary with more stops, and fewer days at sea.

I thought of something I hate about cruising...

Getting off the ship at the end of the cruise!

I went on a singles cruise years ago.. I hated it. I don't like being on a confined area because I bore easily.

I spent the first night suffering from nausea, I should've known better because I get motion sickness in a car! I took a medication that made me very tired but it eventually took away the seasickness.

This boat only spent 8 hours in Bermuda, on a 5 day cruise! I loved being off the boat so this wasn't enough for me.

I hated the stringency of being at breakfast at a specific time and at dinner at a specific time, with the same people  I liked the entertainment and the nonstop food, though, and so did my hips because I gained 8 pounds!! :rotfl2:

All in all I would never do it again.

I have a bit of a phobia about cruising...Iam scared of falling overboard.
I'd be afraid to let my teenage son out of my sight in case he somehow fell overboard.
I know its totally unjustified but I can't help it. I think I read a thread a while ago about a teenage girl who got drunk and fell overboard and was never found.
Also the honeymoooning couple who had an argument and the husband "disapperaed" never to be found again. I can't help it stories like this freak me out about cruises.

Since I get carsick pretty easily I've never wanted to take the chance of getting on a ship.

Okay, a couple of disclosures: I've only been on 1 cruise, and it went through such rough seas that even the crew got seasick. The pool was sloshing so badly, they closed it. The ship was Holland America Westerdam, and it was a 7 day Carribbean cruise.

Having said that, here's the bad: I like to eat meals with my own family. I don't like being assigned to a table with people I've not met. This is just the introvert in me, but I find small talk to be work, not relaxing.

Our cabin was much smaller than a standard hotel room, and we felt cramped.

I don't care for tea or coffee. Why should I have to pay to drink soda pop? That is just silly. I worked in restaurants for years and know that soda costs next to nothing.

We don't gamble. Nothing against it at all, just not something we're into.

For us WDW is a great vacation. We really are happiest when we're moving around a lot, checking out new things. The ship made me feel a little claustrophobic.

Finally I enjoy adult beverages, but they can get pricy on a cruise. In a hotel, we can bring our own.

Now for the good parts:

We loved the islands. We'd fly straight into St Maarten's rather than cruise though.

The sunsets were beautiful, truly.

The crew made you feel extremely welcomed. I feel a little uncomfortable being waited on, but that's me, nothing to do with the crew at all.

The food looked great. I think it would have been really good, but I was so seasick, as were most of the passengers and crew. This wasn't their fault, they don't control the weather, so I'm putting food in the "good things" category.

My advice would be if you haven't cruised, try a short 3 or 4 day cruise. If you like it, you can book a longer one next time. If you don't then you haven't invested so much time or money into it.

I haven't been on a cruise since I was 3. But here's a pathetic reason as to why I might not go on them when I'm older.

Boat and sea = sea sickness.
Sea sickness = vomiting.
Me= Emitophobic.

Not good.

There are tons of products to prevent seasickness. Even the crew will tell you take it BEFORE you get seasick -- easier to prevent than to cure.

I agree with the shorter 3 or 4 day cruise to test the waters so to speak. I did that with DS and my ExBF -- we did the Disney land/sea with the 3 day cruise. Thank goodness they both loved it!

We've only sailed with DCL, but we loved it so much we've booked our 4th cruise for next year. The ship is classy and beautiful, the crew is extremely friendly and accomadating, the food is awesome, and the entertainment is fabulous. I prefer the sea days - so relaxing! We love the fact that we can leave our kids at the Oceaneer's Lab anytime they want to go. They have a great time, and so do we! I prefer the Eastern itineray to the Western (nicer stops) and we had plenty of time to play around on the islands. I've heard way too many horror stories about a couple of other cruise lines, and for that reason I'm hesitant to give them a shot. DCL is pricier then the other lines, but you wouldn't be disappointed!

Teenage drinking on cruise ships is unfortunately a fact of life. Parents must know where their kids are and what they are doing. There are crew members that are willing to serve underage drinkers for cash. There are ports of call with no drinking age, (Mexico) There are teen clubs but one evening I went up to get DS who was 14 at the time and I was so glad that I didn't have a daughter. There was a lot of inappropriate groping that went unchecked by the 'adult' supervisors. There were so many problems with unsupervised teens roaming at night, that finally Royal Carribean instituted a curfew. I found it amazing that young teens, 13 and 14 years old would be roaming the ship when the only people up are the cleaning and maintainance crew and the parents were tucked away in their cabins. I would guess that none of those parents would take a trip to San Diego, go back to the hotel and allow their kids to roam the streets at 2 and 3 am. Why would anyone do that on a cruise ship? Its a city on water with many people from many places. One night we went to an adult comedy act at midnight. Prior to announcing the comedian, the cruise director said; "This is an adults only show, so anyone under 18 please leave and go back to the casino where you are also not allowed". Everyone laughed but there was a LOT of truth in that statement.

lets see... we're going on our 5th disney cruise in Feb...and there are a few things I hate...the last night of the cruise knowing I have to go home and cook for myself, and make my own bed again and I wont have chocolates on my pillow every night. I'll miss the cute little towel animals they make everyday... I hate getting the bill...to remind me of all the shopping I did... I hate that disney doesn't go to Hawaii or Alaska...YET...I hate that I can't go more often ;) I was 2 months pregnant on my first cruise. I really worried about getting sea sick etc. No problems at all. the staff was absolutely incredible. There wasn't much I could eat w/o getting sick and they'd bring me anything I would ask for... I've only cruised w/disney and LOVE IT!! It is so incredible. I took my mom who is deathly afraid of water, can't swim and wouldn't ever go near our in ground pool growing up...she had the time of her life and still talks about it all the time. That was 3 years ago! She tells everyone they have to try it. It is so relaxing, so much to do...so much great food to try! It is awesome that pretty much everything but alcohol, shopping and gratuities are all included... I'd seriously consider it.

take a look at www.cruisecritics.com for a look at the different stories w/the different cruise lines. Disney has only a few entries ever, but then again, they only have two ships where the other lines usually have several more.

I hate that they don't have more tables for 2 and that it is always an ordeal to try to get one.

Make fun of me if you wish, but here's the reason I won't cruise:

Where will I go if the thing catches on fire?!!?!?

I know, stupid thought and I'm sure it's just the worrier in me coming out, but have you seen the movie Titanic????????:confused3

Where will you go? A lifeboat. And UNLIKE Titanic, there is room for everyone!

I couldn't find anything on that site except sponsored links that did not lead to any of the topics they claimed to link to....??
