Why do we have nightmares?

I had a horrific nightmare last night that one of my twin DD's were kidnapped. Without reliving the details, it was terrible. I was screaming, crying, yelling at people - the whole nine yards.

In the dream she was gone for almost a year & we just couldn't get her back.

It was horrible. Why do we have nightmares like this? I hate them.

My mother once had a nightmare that my dd was kidnapped. So she called me at 2 a.m. to see if she was okay.

I don't know why we have to have them. They're awful. I have a couple recurring nightmares that I hate.

In one, my ex-boyfriend, who I detest, is holding me captive and I can't escape.

In another, I'm in high school and I can't remember my locker combination, or I haven't been to school in weeks and I'm super behind in class. I'm always happy to wake up and be old after those.

When I was younger I used to suffer from night terrors, and every once in a blue moon I will have another. They are the worst things I have ever experienced, its been 7 months since my last one.


Nightmares can be terrible and they can really shape the way you live your day. I went through a long period of time after a friend of mine passed away (suicide) where I had nightmares almost every night about him. I was a junior in high school, it was not good timing. I haven't had bad nightmares like that in a long time.

I hope thats the last one you have, at least for a long time.

I also have alot of nightmares about running away from snakes, and you know what Freud would say aout that one

Gosh, I'd like to know the same thing! I had a "nightmare" last night that my DF and I were at our wedding, and all he could do is look out the window at a T.V. playing football outside. I felt terrible that we were married! When I woke up, and to this moment, I still feel a little terrible!

I don't know why we have them. They don't make sense! They say it's our brains way of scrambling through the details of our day, but WHY do they have to be so terrible sometimes?

I had a bad one (for me) the other night. I was trapped in a room that was filling up with poisonous gas...no way I could get out. The air started swirling around me, like a tornado, and in the dream I was losing my sight and hearing and I couldn't speak and I could actually smell the gas...I literally woke up just as everything went black in the dream. My heart was racing and I really wonder if I'd actually stopped breathing for a few minutes. That was kind of scary.

I had a horrible one last night that 2 of my cousins died...they just got sick went into the hospital and died...they are both young men (31 and 24) so I have no idea where that dream came from, but it was just awful.....
