It's probably a media thing. Normal people get arrested and it's 2 names. Serial killers & sickos get arrested and it's all 3.

I was just thinking this the other day. I guess to distinguish them from others. For example there may be other Mark Chapmans so they add the middle name. I think the media does it too.

I think that's really it, at least with the more recent ones: They use the middle name to give other folks with the same first and last names a break.
