-- The wife of hip-hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons has been charged with possessing marijuana and avoiding police, according to law enforcement officials.

Kimora Lee Simmons, the 29-year-old model and designer of the fashion label Baby Phat, was driving home in Saddle River, New Jersey, Monday when police officers attempted to stop her car "for minor motor vehicle violations," Lt. Robert Breese of the Saddle River Police Department told CNN.

Simmons "didn't slow down or stop for police who had their lights and sirens on and used their public announcement system to ask her to pull over," Breese said.

Police arrested Simmons after she eventually stopped outside her house. Officers discovered "a small amount of marijuana" in her car, according to Breese.

She was released after being charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams, eluding police, careless driving, tailgating and driving with a broken brake light.

Russell Simmons, the founder and co-owner of the Def Jam record label, said, "My wife is an excellent driver, and she's not guilty of any crime."

"You don't have to grab my wife and put handcuffs on her, her wrists are all bruised up," he said.

Simmons, 46, has vigorously campaigned to repeal New York State's Rockefeller Drug laws, which require long prison sentences for people caught possessing or selling relatively small amounts of drugs.

"The Rockefeller Drug Laws are unfair, unjust and un-American, and that's why Governor (George) Pataki should repeal these unfair laws now," Simmons said in 2003.

This does not upset me b/c of the small amount of Mary Jane found. What upsets me is that Kimora basically FLED the police officer trying to stop her and yet her husband whines that they "didn't have to grab his wife and put handcuffs on her"......uh, yeah they did. She would not stop for a police officer. She broke the law.

BTW--Have any of you ever watched the MTV Cribs with this couple's house featured? WOW! They are beyond rich.

No, I have never watched the show. But sad to say, the rich think they are above the law because usually they are. , IMOP, money usually can buy your freedom, one way or another.

That's why they call it capital punishment. If you don't have the capital, you get the punishment!

I saw the episode of cribs ans instantly didn't like Kimora Lee Simmons. Who needs a gold toilet?

I'm sorry, but they should be playing the "race" factor either, plus she sounds like a 15 yr old caught with pot, but it wasn't mine and her husband who is old enough to be her dad believes her.

Eonline had the full story too and that is were I read the "race" factor. And if the road didn't have a shoulder to pull over, she should of pulled over in a public place and not driven home either.

first of all - isn't pot illegal? 50grams or 50 lbs...still illegal.

I've only ever seen her on America's Next top Model (the first season that just finished replaying on UPN this past week) she actually didn't annoy me that much...

I agree about the gold toilet...Weird!

But the house itself. I have never, ever seen anyting like it. I kept thinking---What do these people do to get all of this money? Rap music and Baby Phat bought all of this?!?!?

It seemed like a house that only a billionare could build. Not just the house itself, but the furnishings (ie. gold toilet).

She'll get off, I am sure.

I haven't seen cribs, but I live about 20 minutes from Saddle River and those houses are insane. I wouldn't even know what to do with a house that big.

As for being above the law, all celebrities think they are and the sad thing is they usually are. I'm sure we'll be reading about Russell Simmons suing the police department.

:rotfl: that's a good one!

Judges are snobs and they favor the rich. They set the attitude toward the law from themselves down.

Weren't they on a wedding show too? I'm pretty sure they were, but I don't remember what particular one.
