Why do the monorails smell?

As I was growing up we took several trips to WDW. I always loved the monorails. It wasn't until a couple years ago that I started to notice that the monorail cars had a foul odor that I don't remember smelling when I was younger. I've heard other passengers make comments on the "barn" or "urine" smell also.

Is it truly a "dirty" smell or is there a better explaination? Just curious! :D

Alot of sweaty people, would be my guess. I could think of other possiblities, but really don't want to. Uckk!

You would think if it was sweat or just stinky people smell that there would be a spray to get rid of it. I was hoping it was more of a "mechanical" smell than what smells to me like pee-pee! :o

The smell began several years ago when they replaced the carpet in the Monorails. I was told it was the glue that was used. Seems weird that it would still smell after all this time...unless they change the carpet periodically.

The carpets get shampooed on a regular basis... but you'd be surprised what some people do in those trains. :(

yes, I have seen gross things in the trains, the least gross example, someone changing a childs 'fully loaded' diaper, and then leaving it there(have seen this a few times)..... grrrrr! :earseek:

Right before our last trip, I had read the thread about the monorail cars smelling so bad, so we paid particular attention to the smell. Funny thing was--there was NO bad odor on the monorail car unlike the odor we had noticed on previous trips. We came to the conclusion that the bad odor is from hot, sweaty people confined to a small area. Since it was chilly when we were there in December, no one was hot and sweaty and there was no bad odor. The smell has always reminded me of an elementary classroom at the end of the day. Thankfully, we've never been in a monorail car with a discarded dirty diaper. YUCK!

I find they smell like a barn...not a bad smell but distinct to me just the same.

So the smell may be what I thought it was. Yuck!

I was hoping for a less disgusting answer. Well I have seen quite a few people act like animals while at WDW so a barn smell would seem almost appropriate.

I guess it doesn't matter what it smells like, we would all still continue to ride it. I'd use a clothes pin if I had too! ;)

Actually the barn smell is more like hay to me...not that other smell. ;)

I agree with Lisa- it seems more like a "hay" kind of smell. Not a body odor (or worse) smell.

A few years ago when we first notice the 'smell' --- we asked about it & were told that it was from the 'glue' that they used to put down the new carpet inside the monorail. I don't think that the 'glue' smell would last this long!!!!
