Why do smokers......

I need to know why is it that the cigarette butts bother people so much but nothing else seems too?
Because it's one of the few legal habits left that the non-participating people are allowed to express a negative opinion about without crossing any PC lines. In the 70's we got all the garbage on TV and in schools about smoking being bad. The 80's brought us Brooke and washing her hair. And it's just ramped up into the stratoshere since then.

Some people equate smoking with being a pedophile. :confused3 Others point out that a jet plane taking off leaves you with more polution than any smokers within a five mile radius. And don't get me started on busses and automobiles compared to cigarettes when it comes to polution.

I find it curious and interesting that as the ratio of smokers went down, the ratio of children born with asthma, allergies and drug-treatable learning disabilities skyrocketed. An ironic twist, don't you think? Kind of like, "Leave this nicotine drug behind and buy all these other drugs we want to sell you."

But that's a paranoid conspiracy theory best left to the letter carriers. :lmao:

No worries, fellow smokers. In about 50 years people will be saying the same things about overweight people as they are saying about people who smoke today. People have to have something to complain about which is yet another nasty, disgusting habit that's just as detrimental to the health of yourself and people around you as.....well.......smoking. :)

Bolding mine

What kind of people are you talking to???

When I was a kid, my parents taught me that littering was bad, but for some reason it was okay to toss cigarette butts, gum, or apple cores. They said that gum thrown out the car window would just adhere to tires or become part of the pavement, and birds or other animals would eat the apple cores. Not sure what was supposed to happen to the cigarette butts. They didn't smoke by the way(and neither do I), but lots of my aunts and uncles did and do. I think for some reason there are people who just don't think cigarette butts are littering.
I think the gum bothers me just as much as the cig butts. And my dad chewed tobacco. That spit was nasty.

Why do the kids walking home from school throw their chip bags on the ground when walking home from school?

Why does the man going to work throw his coffee cup in the gutter when getting on the bus?

Why does the lady walking her dog throw the bag of poop into the sewer?

Why does the teenager walking the dog leave the poop on the sidewalk or the neighbor's lawn.

Why did the man in walking this morning spit on the sidewalk?

Why did the little boy walking spit his gum onto the sidewalk?

Seriously, many people of all different ages, sexes and whaterver litter in different ways. I'm not saying it's right but as a smoker (who does not throw butts BTW) I need to know why is it that the cigarette butts bother people so much but nothing else seems too?

I don't like other litter either, but it is not flaming when it is being thrown at me, or left with a steady flow of bad-smelling smoke being force upon the person behind or around them (like the man at the drive thru yesterday who left it next to the curb with smoke coming up so every person waiting would get to smell the wonderful aroma from his litter)

Because , of course, they have either overcome the habit, or never had it in the first place, and that makes them soooo much better than we disgusting old cig smokers......They feel so good about themselves.
THEY'RE BETTER THAN US!!!!!

BTW, I pick up after my dog, yes, I'm one of those silly "swinging bags of poop" people being ridiculed on another thread, I never impose my cig habit on another person, even if they're riding in MY car. But I am somehow "less than" the non smoking people who would like to bash me, and that's OK. I'm going out in my front yard now to pick up the Cheetos bags and beer cans and whatever somebody threw there overnight.

Lack of ashtrays. And same thing for the car. Neither of our cars have ashtrays.

My car doesn't have a garbage can, yet when I eat a burger in it I don't throw the wrapper out the window. Not having an ashtry does not make it ok to throw stuff out the window.

Ftr, the cigarettes are not the only trash that bothers me. I couldn't believe how much trash of all kinds was all over the roads once the snow melted. It is disgusting! Why are so many people such pigs?

All littering peeves me. Cigarette butts peeve me more because they ca potentially cause something to catch fire.

There is no excuse for not properly disposing of a cigarette butt period. Tossing them on the ground, out the window etc. is littering and because of the potential for fires, it is more serious than common littering.

It has definately gotten worse over the years. When I was a little kid (early 60s) half the population of the country smoked (this was pre-surgeon general). But everyone seems to carry portable ashtrays and to make sure that the butts didn't go on the ground.

Over the years it seems that many (NOT ALL!) smokers have come to believe that throwing on butt on the ground is the proper way to dispose of it, there are examples of this within this thread.

This is being used as yet another reason for smoking bans - in a number of communities smoking is banned on public beaches and in public parks - not because of second hand smoke, but because the places were becoming huge ashtrays. Lots of smokers like to claim that they are considerate of others - proper disposal of cigarette butts is part of that consideration - if you don't have a place to properly dispose of you butts - don't light up. It is that simple.

:
ETA: But I suppose if I ever see a flaming poop filled disposable diaper sailing from a car window, it would trump every discarded cigarette butt I've ever seen.
When poop flies!

or in the stands at Indianna Jones show, after talking through the whole show and changing the diaper right behind us...

No class

Mikeeee
Phewwwww!!!! I hate when people do that!

Because they don't mind being filthy. Hence their willingness to reek like that.
ITA with the reeking. At his job, DH had to ride in a truck with a smoker. Everyday DH came home smelling like an ashtray. :crazy2:

:confused3 :confused3 WTH????? Pedophiles, a letter carrier conspiracy? :confused3 I don't even know what to say.

:snooty: If you say so.

Because said:
I don't feel I'm better than a smoker, but I DO feel that my right to not have flaming material thrown at my car, and my right to breathe healthy air is important. Others rights end where mine begin, and when smokers throw flaming or smoking material out the window, or smoke where people have no choice but to breathe it in, that is not okay. In Indiana throwing a cigarette out the window is illegal, and people still do it anyway.

I know someone compared it to leaving a dirty diaper on the ground, but it would be more like someone tossing a dirty diaper out the window on a highway and letting it land where it may.

Why did the man in walking this morning spit on the sidewalk?
Now that is one I just don't get. I've even asked male friends why some men do that, and they can't give me an answer. :confused3

One of my wife's co-workers was driving into work and she flicks her cigarette butt out of the window. Next thing she knows, the cop that was right behind her, pulled her over and wrote her up a ticket for littering! She was so mad! It made me chuckle when she had to pay $250 for the privilege of using our streets as her personal ashtray. I don't think she ever did it again.

LOVE IT!!!

For the same reason people leave dirty diapers in the parking lot.

Eww....

When I lived at my old house a women left a dirty diaper by my curb during Halloween. I was like "What the..."

Are you serious? Someone is being negative about those of us who pick up after our dogs? I carry poop bags with me when I walk my dogs. I guess I am one of those "swinging bags of poop" people too. I pick it up, carry it home and dispose of it. I certianly wouldn't leave it for someone else to pick up or step in.

I do not feel like I am better than you. I don't like litter of any kind, but cigs bother me so much b/c they can start a fire. For those looking for a portable ashtray idea, my brother carries a small mint tin with him while fishing that he uses as his ashtray. I thought that was a great idea. I keep a coffee can in my garage for visitors that smoke. They either use the can or throw the butts in my fire pit.

I need to know why is it that the cigarette butts bother people so much but nothing else seems too.
They bother me because they're just gross. I'm always picking up trash from around my home, but I won't even touch those cigarette butts. I don't even use my broom on them. I usually take a stick and push it down into the drain, which is something I don't even like to do. I refuse to touch it because someone's mouth was on it.

Smoking bothers me tremendously because after I am all showered and dressed for the day and I feel all nice and clean, if I happen to walk past someone who is smoking, that ruins it for me. Now my hair is smelly, my clothes are smelly and I feel dirty. I've also inhaled second-hand smoke which is twice as letha than that of the smoke inhaled by the smoker. That means someone's habit has a direct effect on me.
My grandfather died from emphysema. He stopped smoking when I was threee. He passed when I was 30. Twenty seven years of not smoking and he was still affected by it :sad2:

I never said I was better than any smoker, I'm sorry if you felt that way.
BTW, it's good to hear you pick up after your dog. Living in the city, we've Always picked up after our dog. It's just common courtesy :goodvibes
