Why do people quote the post?

Why do people feel the need to quote the whole post when replying? Especially when they are the first person to respond?

I just read a thread that was started with a fairly long post. There are 4 replies and each one quoted the entire original post.

Why? I really don't understand!

If a thread looks like it will get good you want to post the entire OP as evidence.

So that once everyone says the OP is crazy, the OP gets offended and deletes the posts, there will still be evidence of what was said so that those who are late can still get the whole scoop.

Some people have been known to start a thread which draws a lot of opinions and discussion and then edits their original post so all the responses make no sense. The first person to respond quoting the post makes it impossible for the original poster to do this.

This post is an example of Rule One being followed.

I can understand the 1st person to reply on a thread quoting the op, but why would the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th poster quote the op?

Sometimes people are typing out a response that takes a while and don't know that they are the 4th one to reply.

I like the "first person quotes". I'm the type who is always late to the partry and I get lost in some threads. Those are usually the ones where the OP changes their orignal post.

Well, for myself..I have no clue how to not quote except by quoting the whole post.. Sorry.
Also, I do not know how to quote multiple ppls posts into my quote reply. Sorry!
I am still super new to posting and knowing how to do this.

When you are in the post, you add/subtract/delete the text you want.

I agree. However I keep getting flamed when I only quote the specific portion of a post that I am replying to.

I quote so the person I'm responding to knows I'm responding. Sometimes it's not easy to know who a response is for, especially on a large thread.

What does it matter why people quote?

And I thought it was called "the new rule"... Never really saw it called "rule one". But it is a good rule, no matter what it's called!

Did you get burned?

In my opinion, the "rule" injects a bit of accountability. You can't go post something ill-considered, rude, or totally off the wall and then pretend it never happened. It's one way to keep this place semi-respectable. You might think twice about what you post if you know you can't make it go away.

You'll notice that it's never used on "Look at my cute new kitty cat" threads. There's a good reason it exists.

It also preserves the entertainment value of someone going totally off the rails.
