why do my iron-ons run

I made a few shirts for our last trip to Disney and unfortunately while we were there it rained. When our shirts got wet the transfers began to run. I read about people washing their shirts and was wondering what I need to do so my shirts don't get ruined every time they get wet. Is it the printer ink or the transfer paper? Thank you for your help.

I have never had this happen, and we do wash our shirts. What kind of paper did you use and what type of printer/ink are you using? That might help us narrow down the reason for the trouble.

I used HP transfer paper that I bought from Staples. I have an HP printer and used an HP ink cartridge. I would like to try again, but am afraid the same thing will happen. Maybe I should try different paper.

that paper should be fine...

First wash the shirt. (without fabric softner) dry without dryer sheets.

Then print your design, let dry and then iron on per the directions.

After that you should be able to wash/wear/whatever with no runs in the ink.

Works with all inkjet printers except Deskjet 1200 and Deskjet 1600 printers



Needless to say my printer is a 1200 series. Mystery solved.

glad to see that you figured it out! I hope that you can use another paper and have better results. I use Avery dark transfer paper that I purchase at Walmart and have had great luck with it. Others on here order paper from a seller on dbay but I have not had a problem with the Avery paper. Good luck!

sounds like it maybe the ink used in those printers then.. so new paper might now work either?

The instructions in the Avery Dark T-Shirt Transfers I have also specifically says, "Do not use t-shirt transfers in the HP Deskjet 1200C or 1600C printers, as they apply heat which will adversely affect the transfer."

My assumption is that these printers must be thermal printers as opposed to true inkjet printers. This "application of heat" is the same reason you can't feed most t-shirt transfer paper through laser printers either.
