Why do I want an SLR?

op the difference between an xt and xti are linked in this thread

other than what master mason and others have mentioned
imo, brand loyalty aside, when it is annoying to not be able to take what you want to, you need a dslr...as far as a learning curve...if you are going to really use it on manual modes it will take some learning but i think most( i only have had canons so that's the only one i am positive about) have auto modes that basically are not different to use than a p&s except you have the option of different lenses etc...husband just decided to fore go the s3 canon bridge model and get me the 30d and then he'll use my rebel xt to "learn" on ...if you want to learn to be a better photographer, i think eventually you'd end up with a dslr due to the ability of not really being limited except by your own skill. sinking the money into it takes a fair amount of commitment though, at least to me it does:)

This is not exactly true b/c of the DOF. Try taking the same shot with a p&s and a DSLR both at say f/2.8. The DOF of the p&s is dramatically larger. It is almost impossible to even create DOF on a p&s unless it is a macro shot.

I chose one for the cardio workout of carrying a 5-15 pound bag anytime I want to take pics.

Wait, how 'bout the misaligned spine from carrying it on one side too long?

op said all she had ever used was a p&s and
evidently i wasn't clear but i said to use it, ie you put it on auto and push the shutter, it does the work of setting shutter etc for you which is why i mentioned learning curve with the manual settings, dof has nothing to do with knowing to push the shutter and have it take a photo:confused3,,, or do you just want to argue due to our cameras:)

I am not trying to argue at all. The actions to take the shot are the same, but I just do not want the OP to think the results will be the same.

I know I was just stirring the pot a bit on you :) you have to compare apples to apples.
No problem, I can take it as well as dish it out. :thumbsup2

As for ease of use, I think they, on auto, most people should be able to get very satisfactory photos out of a DSLR, probably much better than a PnS on auto, and probably won't encounter serious DoF issues as the kit lens than a new DSLR user would be using isn't capable of doing really small DoF anyway.
