Why do I get funny looks when buying

Had to do some shopping and got the weirdest looks:
Leaf bags
surgical gloves- for painting and working on the car
Tongs- (not THONGS) for cooking

Sounds like you're shopping at the wrong stores. Maybe you just don't look like the "do-it-yourself" type?

Another suggestion might be to get a few other essentials while you are there. I've always found it helps to include a few of the following DIY items:

duct tape - for just about anything that needs to be held together
rope or twine - for bundling things neatly
bleach - for those really nasty clean-up jobs
chain saw - for cutting big chunks into smaller ones
shovel - for getting the soil ready to plant things
