I have been following and participating in a post that was critical of the recent Magic sailing. Now it has dissapeared. I have heard of posts being locked but complete removal? Just wondering and a little concerned that critical posts are disappearing. Maybe I missed something?

*edited to say I was able to see the original thread I tried to respond to and now understand why it disappeared altogether*

I wanted to let the original poster know I was sorry her cruise turned out to be such a bummer and I sure hope folks continue to post their cruise experiences, both good and bad, so we can all learn from it. That's what this board is all about, right?

Don't know why they dissapear but, it may because it gets pretty rough after awhile. Some posters seem to think that thier opinion is the only one that counts. I find it kind of stimulating as a Firefighter/Medic and a biker due to all the people I come in contact with. I would think the Moderators of this board just finally get fed up with all the gripping. IMHO

jrp, thats what i guessed too. But really, an explanation and lock up of the thread would be more appropriate. It leads me to believe that we are not supposed to voice the negatice experiences. Moderators, correct me if I am wrong.

lookingforward, I also agree with jrp.

I've been lurking on this board for a little while now, and I have seen where people were allowed to post their negative experiences. However, it seemed like some just droned on and on after a while. At that time, I just went to other boards on this site and found more interesting things to read. It's one thing to be disappointed or even pissed off about something, but to get to the point where, weeks later, you're still trying to recruit bandwagon members for your cause, it gets old. JMHO

I have participated in this board for over 2 years and you would be surprised how heated some of these threads can get.

Each Moderator has their own tolerance level, but in most cases the Mod will interject and state the reason for the termination of the thread.

As a Disney fan I prefer to hang out with other Disney fans, but sometimes even good-natured folks don't get along.

Moderating is a difficult task at times. I will attempt to answer this on behalf of my other board moderators.

It is not always appropriate to just close and leave a post. Sometimes there are things that warrant being removed (attacking posts, etc.) and it becomes more difficult to remove the offending posts and leave the thread in tact and still have it make sense. In those cases it often ends up being better to remove the entire post.

I hope this helps explain things a bit.

SueEllen, thanks for the timely response. I appreciate it. Personally, I don't think people who complain are trying to get others on their band wagon. I do strongly believe that they may continue posting in order to defend themselves from just those personal attacks that SueEllen mentioned. Now, if we can all just get along!

So much for free speech..........................I guess our amendment rights are getting taken away by the Disboards.......LOL!

I wish to thank SueEllan for her post to this sensative issue. Even in a land of free speech you will ultimately be censored in public if it is affending in such a way as to be deemed vulger or threatening. It is unfortunate but, neccessary. I gues you could call it BOARD RAGE:hug: LOL Have a good one all.

The First Amendment states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

I fail to see how "our amendment rights are getting taken away by the Disboards."

The DIS Boards website has no legal obligation to allow any posts or threads to remain. The website can set the rules, and moderators can enforce them as they see fit. Along the same lines, the New York Times has no obligation to print something that you submit to that newspaper.

Now, if the government were to pass laws regulating the content of the DIS Boards website or the New York Times, that would be another matter.

The DIS boards are not exactly free speech. While it is free to use it, the government is not picking up the tab, Dreams Unlimited, Peter Werner and his sponsors pick up the tab. They are entitled to some editorial control, similar to what a newspaper or news show or magazine has. One reason why it does stay so civil is the wonderful over-view of the moderators. I'm sure some of you are familiar with some of the Usenet Disney threads, they are filled with a bunch of tripe and trolls. Totally Free Speech in action, but not lovely for a family audience.

Horace and I do have senses of humor, really. I would assume he, as I, just wanted to inform as to what the status of these boards are. Lots of folks do not know.

Yes, I saw the "LOL" in the post.

However, I thought it was worth responding anyway because some folks seem to think that freedom of speech means that a moderated bulletin board has an obliglation to allow anything to be posted. That's just not the case.

Hey Horace, did you hear the one about the..... Wasn't that you way back when who kept the malaprops thread going? A "redneck" version has been going on for several days on our cruise thread. Wonder what ever happened to it...

Come on everyone. I didn't see the offending thread, but I think that the mods must be pretty liberal here. I mean really. There are tons of threads here about how great other TAs are and even one thread asking if anyone has had negative experiences with DU. Now, the mods here could be very strict like they are now on cruisecritic and refuse to allow discussion of any specific TA names. I've even seen threads like this one disappear on cruisecritic.

I'm just glad they allow the free exchange of info, and if people start yelling in their posts, I have no problem with them deleting it. I don't have time for nastiness either. I'm not sure if the Disboards has the ignore function or not...but I really love it on cruisecritic. If a particular poster is constantly argumentative, I click ignore and never have to read that poster's posts again! Now, we're talking. I just wish the Dis would upgrade vbulletin to have some of those features!:)

vossjemi--just an FYI, the DIS boards do have the ignore feature. You can go to your user profile to access it.

Thanks Sue Ellen. I guess I hadn't found anyone so obnoxious yet on Dis to actually research it, which is a good sign!:D
