I know there has been a lot of speculation about why some people get pins. I know some offers seem to be related to people doing searches for packages on the website. My question is, "How in the WORLD did my mom and dad get a pin in their email?" They haven't taken a trip to WDW since 1983. They didn't even have an email to register back then. How did Mickey know their email address????

I am really glad I got the pin yesterday, or I would have been REALLY frustrated that they got one and I didn't!

If anyone can figure out how they decide these things, I would love to hear it!

ETA: I almost choked when I read the first line of my mom's email. She forwarded the pin code to me and said, "I don't know if this is anything of value, but I thought I would send it to you since you enjoy Disney..."

No one knows and Disney isn't saying.I will say I was extremely frustrated this past March when I got a 40% off and it was in the name of afriend of mine that once went to Disney as my guest( everything was in my name) .My friend DIED a few years back, never lived with me and yet this pin comes and Disney wouldn't allow me to use it....I think Disneys system is really messed up

It's been seven years since hubby has had a room as a lead guest, and he's never given Disney an email, though he did send for a vacation CD to give to my mom once many many years ago. He managed to get a few PINs mailed in his name this year and last year.

We go 2 or 3 times a year and the res is always in my name with hubby listed second. I never ever get a PIN through mail or email, he's gotten I think four so far, all snail mail.

I go to WDW 4-5 times a year and have never gotten a PIN in my name. My 75 y/o mom moved in with me about four years ago. I took her for her first ever WDW trip that winter (my dad never would go). I have since taken her three times after that. Last fall she got a 40% PIN addressed to her at my house. We are going to WDW again in Dec using that PIN. Every reservation has always been in my name, plus I always order the planning DVDs every year, and have my email registered with every Disney sight I can find.

We have gone every year for the past6 years. Never got a pin. I hadn't made a ressie for this year due to finances and they sent me one in the spring. Coincidence?:confused3

Check out the Dining PIN FAQ in my signature. It has a few lines on your question.

I also have never gotten a pin code or postcard. I don't know how they do it but my parents got the free dining postcard that is good through Dec. They have been to Disney once and I pd for the trip and the only address or any contact info was through me. We did a visa fall pkg and all three rooms were booked with my Disney Visa card. Actually, my parents got a post card and the other family that traveled during that same vacation also has gotten several postcards since that trip. I did not pay for the second family's trip but I did pay for it and they pd me back. I get nothing !!

We use to travel every year with a family that owns DVC and has a Disney Visa and they get every post card and pin. They live less than a mile from us and they travel to Disney more than us so who knows :confused3.

I don't understand it either but boy they are good at finding people.

This is our second year getting the free dining pin for Oct-Dec. I have not done anything this year (I haven't been on their site or called them), last year I applied for the visa, checked out their site. Last year I got it in Sept, I just got it today for this year.

it doesn't matter if you've gone to Disney 100 times or 0 times. It's whatever you registerred your e-mail with. the more Disney places you register, the better the chance.
I asked a lady when I called Disney once and she told me that it's a totally random system. One person can get tons of pins, while the next might not get any. She said the computer system will pick a block in a town or city and that's how it works. The computer will pick blocks or certain locations.

I posted this in another thread, but my PIN today came to an old school email address. The only reason I received the email was my school still has this old address forwarded to the new address. I haven't used the old email for 2-3 years!

I've heard a similar tale from many folks.

Strange.

I just received my 4th PIN in 3 months. I was not planning a trip for 2009, but these PINS are making it so hard to not just start planning a trip.

I do participate in the disneyrewards (the codes you put in when you buy disney dvds). I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Maybe it would be worth it to at least sign up even if you don't have any dvd codes to put in.

My boss has been to Disney twice - 14 years ago and in 2006 (I got to plan this one for him:goodvibes). I went into his office earlier this week to send an email from his computer at his request and the word "Disney" jumped right off the page at me from his inbox. He had received a pin code! I didn't say anything to him about it right away, but when I did a few days later, he didn't realize it was such a big deal. When I explained how coveted these things are, he started looking into it a little further. He may plan a trip during their fall break. He was sitting on gold and didn't even know it!;)

For what it's worth, I would guess that if you already go to disney a lot (maybe 2 or more times per year?) then why would they need to give you an incentive? To them, you'll likely go anyway.

If you're a sporadic user or someone who hasn't been in a while, these specials could be ways to get you back.

Regarding how they got your email address if you never signed-up, welcome to the digital age. :) I would imagine that you unknowningly agreed to a TOS somewhere else which is affiliated with Disney in some way, or they simply sold your info to them...

My 2 cents.

Some people may be signed up with a Disney owned company (Disney affiliate sites), such as ABC, ESPN or something that gives Disney access to their email. Maybe they signed up for something that Disney is partnering with, like a contest. When they took a vacation there they may have shipped something home, or someone else took a vacation to Disney may have sent them something from Disney. There are lots of ways Disney could have gotten an email address.

I doubt--KNOW--it has nothing to do with how often you do or do not travel. DH has never been a lead on a ressie, but he gets pins--mostly to Disneyland. I am always the lead, and we go for 10 days once a year minimum, and I always receive pins. I use different email address for different things and I received one pin 3 times earlier this year.
