Why Disney may not have Md. style crabcakes anytime soon

Uncleromulus went on what is his annual "crabfeast" jaunt to a favorite spot in Middle River last nite. By the dozen, the steamed crabs were $48.00, $68.00 and (can you believe this)?? $80.00!!!
That's right--$80.00 a dozen. And people were buying them!!
Can you imagine what a pound of that Backfin would cost??? A twin backfin crabcake platter at a place like the Flying Fish would probably have to be priced at $50.00---or more.

My GOSH!!! We were paying those prices last year for a bushel of crabs (JIMMIES) in Va Beach!

Of course... the one thing we miss by living in Florida now are the Blue Crabs!

What does a platter go for now at the Flying Fish?

I read the Flying Fish makes crabcakes with 90% crab (only 10% filler), and this is a much higher percentage than average (or just about anywhere else?). Is this true? Is this why they taste better?

Actually, crabcakes aren't an entree at the FF--at least they weren't in May. They have something called "Peeky-Toe" crabcakes as an appetizer. Tasty to be sure, but not to be confused with the genuine Md. style.

Gee, around us in S. Jersey, they've been really plentiful this summer. Why are they so expensive? I've heard that this has been a great year for crabbing.

WOW! I can't believe that but it does clear something up for me, thanks! There is a restaurant here in MA that has a crabfest once per month during the summer except this year they aren't having one until Sept. It must be the expense. I'm so sad though as blue fins are my most favorite food. I'll miss the crabfest in Sept since I'm at WDW that week so V&A's better be pretty good to make up for it! :).

Uncleromulus,
Steamed crab prices are really high this year, I'm sure it's due to all the rain we've had.
I'm a MD native and my favorite crabcakes can be found right near BWI ariport at G&M restaurant, very reasonable and delish, and you can order them online too!

I've never had the pleasure of having a true Maryland crab cake although my husband insists that they're just not as good anywhere else.

Laurabelle-you are sooooo right, G&M is the best by far! We even order them to feast on here at home in Texas. I've tried a zillion and nothing compares to G&M...that's why I rarely order them anywhere, including Disney.

Actually the peeky toe crabs are supposed to be better than the regular blue claws. And you can have these as an entree at the fish by asking - my DW just had them (four of them) as an entree on Wed the 30th.

I've had them as an appetizer twice now. As I said, very tasty. But not a true Md. style cake. Missing is the lump/backfin meat, along with the Old Bay, etc seasonings. I've heard of G&M, but a tad too far to go for dinner. My favorite of the spots I can reach-Michaels, on York Rd. in Timonium.
Back to WDW--also had versions of a crabcake at Fultons, Flying Fish and Citricos--none came close to the genuine article.
I guess it's sort of like the genuine Chicago hot-dog. Once you've had one, the others just seem to be lacking. Tasty, certainly, but not the "real" thing.

Wow... I knew that they were smaller this year, but down in the outer banks, they are only running about $60 a bushel!

Uncleromulus,
I just moved to Timonium last year! I haven't tried Michael's yet, but now it's on my list, thanks!

I have a group of friends who live in the DC area that I get together with for lunch about every 6 weeks. We used to try different restaurants until I took them to G&M, now they don't want to go anywhere else! :) BTW- G&M crabcakes are JUMBO lump, yummmm.

You're talking about crabs that you have to crack open and get the meat out??

I was just complaining to DH that the local Boiling place had large Blue crabs for $22 a dozen-they usually are $8-15. I guess I have it good.:p ;)
