Why did you buy in?

Our first family trip to the Poly. that cost about $8,000 was enough to get us to buy in.

We stayed at the Poly in 1985 for our honeymoon, returned in 90 with my family at CB ... we had a great time, but tight having 7 of us in 2 rooms ... In 1997 life at work was very stressful ..I remember calling my husband and asking him to please try and book a trip to Disney ..It was the month of May ...he called me back and advised while talking with CRO a cancellation had just come in for Dixie Landings ..so off we went ... I honestly don't remember how we ended up at the DVC sales office, but I do remember starting off touring BWV's and then being taken over to OKW, where the sales center was still set up .... no pressure sales, which after all the other time shares we've attended we were most impressed with, and we loved the resorts, and really liked the spacious, laid back feeling of OKW .. we signed up before leaving that day ... 220 points and have never looked back!

It's just the two of us and we enjoy sharing our DVC with family and friends. We've since added on again at OKW and BWV .. we're looking forward to retirement in a few years and spending "weeks" at OKW!!

We've traded to Hawaii once, but other than that, it's been DVC properties. We do rent to co-workers from time to time, but only if we've decided to vacation elsewhere ...we normally have no problem using our points. We had one year where we stayed a total of 25 days in a 1-bedroom and enjoyed every minute!!

DVC makes being a Disney very enjoyable .... there is the knowledge that this does not have to be a comando trip, we can kick back, enjoy the resort, enjoy the parks as we choose ... we relax ...something we didn't do when visiting WDW in the past, as we always felt we needed to be on the go. Our jobs are stressful ..we both love driving through the gates of WDW/DVC and leaving the world behind ...it's GREAT! :yay:

Enjoy planning your first trip, and enjoy taking the DVC tour ..and if you find after hearing/seeing what it is all about that it's right for your family ...we'll all be here to welcome you home!! :cheer2:

DH and I have been going to Disney since we were engaged. We have found that as we are getting further away from our college days (didn't want to say older :rotfl: ) we like a few more amenities and we don't want to pound it in the parks like we've doing the last several years. We've tried other vacations and yet we always return to Disney. It has been getting more expensive for us and DVC was a good way (although not initially) to curb our costs, give us the ability to travel more frequently and visit some other places on our "to do" list less expensively. (yes, we know it may not be the best use of our points, but that's us)

We bought so that we would actually take a vacation every year. DH had a bad habit of not taking his vacation every year. We decided if we bought DVC that he would not be missing out on that yearly vacation because he wouldn't want to waste the money he spent on DVC by staying home. Since we've been owners we have taken at least one vacation each year. We don't always go to WDW, but we always go somewhere.

I could only wish:worship: that my wife loved Disney like me . I have been going to Disney so much that the kids & wifey would not be mad if we never go again :rotfl2: .Of course that will never happen I have been renting for the past three years and I just got tired of renting . I love Disney like no other and could not imagine a year without that trip so I just purchased 160points so I can enjoy my Vice :woohoo: in peace

It was my DH who had been doing research on DVC. Not secretly, but it wasn't really an ongoing dicussion in our house either. So, while we were waiting for our ADR at WCC in 2006 DH decides to go over to the DVC kiosk & sign us up for the tour. I wasn't against it, but I didn't really want to take time away from the parks (we were sort of commando that year).

I was sold about 10 minutes into the tour/sales talk. But didn't want to buy without thinking it over. Wihtin a week we discovered that we were having another baby and spending $ on DVC got put on the back burner.

So, in April 2007 DH finally commits to quit smoking and one off the components of his quitting program is to reward himself with something he really wants. Lucky for me, he choose DVC! With AKV now being an option, it was a no brainer for us.

Although I did tell him if he starts smoking again we are going to Disney without him. :rolleyes1

My in-laws purchased points @ OKW when it first was available. They would take our family and 2 sisiter in laws families. You would go one year with one family and the next with the other and then a year off. My son has been going to disney since he was 9 months, my daughter since 2 1/2 and every time it is a different experience. We now go once every 3 years with them as the kids got older and harder to pick a time to go.

Then for our 10th anniversary we did a last minute trip. Decided to go on the Wednesday and left on a Friday. We stayed at All Star Music (only thing available) it was ok but not what we were used to so at that moment we decided to buy some points of our own. We first bought a resale of 270 OKW points and then added 210 of BCV. We have more points than we need right now but wanted to do for our kids and future grandchildren what my in-laws have done for us.

We bought in because we wanted to have our future childrens vacations paid for before they were born. That was four years ago. We are just now trying for children, so we have been able to enjoy the membership as a couple.
In terms of my husband going along with it, he was really uncertain. He didnt really want to do it. So I knew that I had to let him make the decision...or atleast make him feel like he was in charge in the decision. :rolleyes1 So, I sat there as he grilled the DVC rep and then waited on pins and needles overnight while he thought about it. He agreed to it the next day....so, it all worked out.

We bought in because we are a family of 6 and always needed two rooms. I was a cast member at the Disney Store (when it was owned by Disney) and got a discount toward DVC. We were able to pay in full, so we didn't have to finance. We liked that it would keep us planning for another vacation, and there's something for everyone at Walt Disney World. DH thought that it would be nice to trade out in the future to go somewhere else in the world, but I am the planner and don't see that happening anytime soon :) .

We were staying at the All Stars at the time we took our tour - 2 rooms for almost 2 weeks. My aunt and uncle were with us and noticed the DVC stands and said that I should ask about it since we go so often. I did, we took the tour, signed after 2 hours and got a lunch at the ESPN. Now we are spoiled.

I finally realized that I think this is a goal I want to work towards. My business is big on goals and dreams and this is something in a few years I want to be able to pay for for my family. Convincing dh is another issue. One thing I know he is against is the "timeshare" deal. But I keep trying to tell him you aren't locked into X week in X month. There are other issues too. We have never vacationed at Disney. We both have done one dayers but not a Disney vacation. So I'm hoping after we do one (soon hopefully), he'll think different.

So, why did you buy in? Was your spouse for or against it at first?

We started visiting WDW around 1980. We first took the kids avery few years, and then got hooked on the Disney magic and started to go everyother year. We first stayed off site to save money, but those beautiful on site resorts kept calling us, so our first stay on site was at Carribean Beach when it first opened. We loved it and kept watching the building of Disney Vacation Club on one trip. We thought it looked like a good idea, but also thought we needed to save up to pay in full for it. Then we started going and staying at the deluxes. After a couple of trips with accommodations costing in the thousands, we figured we might as well buy DVC and put that money toward 50 years of accommodations instead of just one trip. We finally purchased our first contract in 1997, 4 years after first taking the tour!!! The good thing is that we paid for it in full. After planning the first year's worth of trips, we knew our 230 points were not going to be enough, so we added on another 150 at the same resort. We have decided it was one of the best things we have ever done!! After 11 years, we are still enjoying everything about DVC and WDW, and can see ourselves continuing to vacation in this same manner for as long as we can travel. We are in our 60's, and plan to continue this for a good long time yet!

I went to the World on our 1 year anniversary in 2003. Stayed at CB resort and fell in love. I've since read everything there is practically about Walt, so a huge fan of his. I even blog about the guy and his legacy. We've been back many times now and just had our second child.:teacher: We were able to pull off buying the 180 points through resale, knew we'd go at least once a year, liked moderate to deluxe accommodations, and wanted to take people with us that otherwise might not afford it. AND, give something to the kids later on down the line.

It's a big up-front decision...but I'm already glad we did it and I just sent the check last week!

Reasons we bought:

My DH loves Disney, even more than I do. It's one place we are all enthused about. We've always had a great time there. Lots of options for all of us.

Our DDs were approaching the teen years & we knew this was a place where they could have a bit of freedom especially if we stayed onsite (which we had never done before buying DVC).

We wanted to be onsite in a suite type room with a kitchen. DVC was a great way to do that.

I turned 40 & was promoted at my job, which I had been working towards for many years, in fact both of us had worked towards it because DH is so supportive of my career. So the time was right for a special purchase!
