Why did I buy knives at Kmart.com (vent)

I am having company on xmas and needed some new steak knives. I checked Kohls, Macys, Target, etc. Most of the ones I would be interested in were sold out online and I didn't want to deal with the mall so I checked Kmart.com. I saw that Gordon Ramsey has a set of knives and being a Gordon Ramsey fan, I had to buy them. That had good reviews at a decent price.

I received them in the mail on Tues. When I took them out of the box the largest knife has a chunk of the handle broken off.

I sent an e-mail asking for just a replacement of the large knife(they do sell it separately so it's not like they have to break up the set)

I get an e-mail saying to bring them back to the store for a replacement.

Sure, I have nothing else to do this week right? That option would be okay if I knew for sure they would be in stock. Also I don't have the invoice or knife box b/c I took everything out and tossed the box outside with the trash and it got rained out. No idea where the invoice went (recieved multiple packages that day, unpacked everything and thought I kept all invoices but can't find this one)

I send another e-mail asking what to do with no box or invoice and was told to ship the whole thing back. Now what do I do about knives for x-mas?

Why did I buy knives from Kmart just b/c I happen to love Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares?

I am thinking I am going to have to just take the hit and buy another large knife myself after the holidays are over.

Use the knives on Christmas and then send them all back on Monday.

OR

Just buy the replacement knife, since it is sold separately when they return the broken one for a refund.

That is a great idea! I didn't even think about it since they would be used, but it doesn't really matter since they can't be sold again anyway.

I am just so annoyed and have 10,000 things to do before x-mas, I didn't even think about that. Thanks!

Seems like you should be able to look up the invoice/ receipt on kmart.com. I would just use the knives then return to the store after Christmas.

Wow, really people? That is not ok to do. They can probably repack the knives that are not defective with a single knife. Instead you all seem to think it is ok to ruin the ones that are still good. And we wonder why stuff keeps going up in price at the stores.:sad2: And why stores keep making it harder and harder to return things.

It stinks that you got a bad knife, but the fastest way to get a replacement is to go over to Kmart and pick one up. Call ahead and if they have one they would set it aside for you.

I can't help but wonder too why you would pitch the box once you knew you had a defective item.

Please do not use the knives and then return them for a full refund. It is just not ethical at all. If you cannot get a replacement knife before the date you need them, go buy knives elsewhere to use, and return the unused & defective K-Mart set when you can.

I never wanted a full refund. I emailed Kmart.com customer service a few times and stated I just want another knife or even a partial refund to buy the one replace but they don't seem to be actually reading the e-mail. They keep saying bring back the set or mail back the set even though I have repeatedly said I don't want to so that. It did seem a bit wasteful to me.

I tossed the box outside on top of the recycle bin to break down later and it happened to be raining that night. I do have the box, it has just been damaged. I recieve multiple UPS shipments so I took everything out of the packages and tossed them outside to make some room. Even once I saw the broken knife, I didn't even think to grab the box. Too many things going on I guess.

I wanted to go elsewhere to buy another set of knives but with 2 days before xmas I just didn't have the time.(which is why I ordered them online in the first place) I worked during the days and the stores would be packed by the time I got out. We live in a town with one of the major malls and shopping areas in our county and the roads get crazy the days before xmas.

Since I don't have the time to get a new set before xmas I will just replace the knife myself after xmas and take it as a lesson learned. No more Kmart for me for quite some time, and always keep boxes/invoices handy until after items have been inspected. Just really disappointed with Kmarts customer service.

I can't think of any store that would take only part of a set back. It may seem a bit crazy, but if part of a set is defective, you need to return the whole thing, not just the defective part. I worked at Kmart many moons ago, and that has always been how things were handled. And how we handle them now at the store I currently work at.

If something is sold as a unit, that is how you have to return it. As a unit. Not as part of a unit.

1) Why blame Kmart?
2) Did they break the knife?
3) Or was it inadequate packaging/handling from factory?
4) As for a return policy
. . . most store want the old one back, first
. . . few stores send out replacements without seeing old ones
5) Next time, if in doubt, buy a more superior knife. *

* Anyone who swears that much can't have good knives.
Good knives are not required when sticking into someone's back.
However, cutting meat is as different story.

That makes me feel better about returning the set. I still haven't used them. I am thinking I will just use my older, mismatched knives tomorrow, return the whole set and find a better set this week.

You brought up a good point. I will just return the whole set and find something else.

I didn't expect a replacement before sending the old one. I just wanted a clear answer from Kmart on whether I needed to return the set, to the store or online but each answer I got them was different which is really the cause of my annoyance at Kmart. Just wanted a clear answer on how to procede with the return and couldn't get one.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good knife set that won't break the bank. Not cheap but not overly expensive either.

If you like the knife set other than the one with the broken handle I'd do this.

:grouphug: btw. I can't imagine trying to cook an Xmas dinner without good knives ... I think all cutlery I own I picked up in either Switzerland or Japan at a premium (exchange-rate wise, we were travelling to travel:laughing:) but good knives in the kitchen are one of the few things I'm not okay with skimping on. They're completely mismatched but all work like a dream.
