Why can't we join Interval International as DVC members?

I know for certain that we cannot sign up for Interval membership, but does anyone know why that is? I know there must be a reason... it's certainly a limitation of DVC membership....

Chris, in order for owners at a resort to join II, there must be a contract between II or RCI that allows it. That's a decision that II/RCI make. They could allow you to join if they wanted, like the smaller ones do, though with II I suspect the contract currently prohibits it. This has never been in place. As to whether it's a good or bad thing depends on your situation. To me it's more negative than positive but to most members it's probably best the way it is.

Benefits of the current setup

  • $75 exchange fee rather than $129-149 per trade.
  • No yearly membership fee.
  • Very useable search first option which would go away if you were able to join II as a regular member. They do have search first but it is far less useful than what you have through DVC.
  • Chance to say no even if you match though this is a little less of a benefit now with the new non refundable exchange fee.
  • Many of the additional resorts you'd get access to are far below the quality of DVC.
  • DVC tries to help you get what you want and deserve where with II, they mostly just take orders.

Benefits to joining II directly
  • Wish book.
  • Ability to trade up in unit size.
  • Access to more resort options.
  • cheaper trades in the 60 day window.
  • cash getaways.
  • Search online and possible instant matches which includes building knowledge of their system for future exchanges.

The change you suggest would benefit those of us who are already members of II and comfortable with exchanges and one or more yearly exchanges and planning a full year in advance while committing to that planning. But considering only about 2-3% of the members exchange in any given year, I think the current setup is better overall for the majority of the owners. Don't get the idea that we could join II directly AND keep all the benefits in place, it' would NOT be an option. And neither would it be an either/or situation. Plus, it's likely some of the other options would go away like BVTC and possibly everything else but the DC.

Thanks Dean... this is one of those situations where I wish we could have it both way's... keeping current policies in place while also allowing us to join II... Due to an RCI last call last week, we were able to take a highly coveted vacation to Smuggler's Notch in Vermont... I know that II has similar last call sort's of vacations.... I have membership through neither association & am now looking at buying an RCI unit with low MF's just to gain access to Last Call's... during the summer we can travel on a moment's notice...

Anyhow... those are my musing's for the moment.... Thanks again :)

Consider Bluegreen or RCI points as it'll give you access and a fair amount of flexibility.

Thanks Dean... I was looking at a CHEAP Sheraton, Myrtle Beach Summer unit, but it would be nice to find something with lower MF's... Anyhow, if you have any particular unit or timeshare in mind, email me :)

Thanks!

I think yearly fees can be more important than purchase price in many situations. BG points can be bought for about 40¢ per point resale. For RCI points I understand there are quite a few resorts that get you in fairly cheaply but haven't checked into it that much. South Africa would likely be your best bet with RCI just to get something cheap to get into the system. One size does not fit all. Do your research and find what fits best for your situation.
