Why Can't Anyone Spell 'Ohana Correctly?

Due to my upcoming trip, I've been hanging out on the Restaurant Board. If I see 'Ohana spelled: O'hana one more time, I think I'm going to scream!

It's taking all my willpower to hold back over there and not snark out a response to the butchering of the restaurant name. I don't want to make them all feel badly, but sheesh!

I guess because it's not a common word so no one really knows how it's supposed to be spelled.

While I'm a bit of a grammar and spelling freak, this particular mistake doesn't bother me. :confused3

Spelling/grammar stuff--especially on a message board--I can let go of pretty easily. I certainly make a TON of mistakes on the DIS. But, I guess when you are the restaurant board and it is just going on and on and on, it just starts grating on the nerves.

The example I gave in my OP on the spelling was just one way I've seen. I'm astounded at the various ways it is spelled.

people spell my user name wrong all the time - that's life....I guess I would let bigger issues get my panties in a wad...(there are TONS of spelling, etc, mistakes - maybe we should have a mod squad of proofers)

My panties aren't in a wad. It's just a comment. I've noticed it over the years and just usually chuckle or roll my eyes. But after spending two days on the restaurant board--WELL--it's just odd.

Well, it's not an English word, so people get confused, though Lilo & Stitch helped. The 'okina throws people off, too, so they think there's supposed to be an apostrophe in there somewhere. The worst misspelling I've seen is O'Hanna's, like it's an Irish Hawaiian restaurant. :rotfl:

I guess a lot of people must be of Irish heritage and it's normal for them to think in O's not 'O...Just a thought.

I guess for the same reason they ask for advise instead of advice! I would advise people to spell 'Ohana correctly!

Yesterday I read a response on a thread about the school system. It was praising their child's school and the quality of education, yet it was riddled with spelling mistakes. I sure hope that kid's education is better than his mother's was!

I don't care how people spell it.....that doesn't even rate on my "irritation meter".

Well you're WRONG WRONG WRONG!!:lmao: :lmao: There, I feel better now.;)

Well, in my defense, I've never eaten there. In fact, I don't even know where that particular restaurant is located. :rolleyes1

I understand where you're coming from though. When people spell "lose" as "loose," that is a HUUUUGE pet peeve. I'm not even sure why. It just bugs me more than most misspellings do lol.

That never really bothered me, but it does bug me slightly me when 's is added to 'Ohana or to Boma, as if the place is named for a person named Boma or 'Ohana.

Like many here, I never noticed how 'Ohana was spelled either :p. I think the Irish O' is just such a part of our language that the 'Ohana misspelling just happens subconciously. As kind of a grammar and spelling nerd myself, I'm actually glad you pointed this out.

The weird thing is now I have the name Obama ('Ohana + Boma) stuck in my head :lmao:.
