Why buy points at another DVC?

We are thinking about buying into DVC, so I am trying to get a good understanding of this. I see that people have a home resort, but then buy points from another DVC property. What is the purpose of this? Does this allow you to book at the 11-month window, instead of the 7 month window? And if it allows you to book at the 11-month window, can you use all of your points from your home property as well?

I too am a little confused as to why people have multiple home resorts. But my take is that it gives the owners the ability to book at the 11 month mark. With small contracts some will bank and borrow to have enough points to book a room. Some people have more than one favorite place to stay and travel to WDW more than once a year. This definitely gives the owners a booking advantage.

If you are really flexible and don't care where you stay outside of your home resort, you don't need to own at more than 1 resort. Or, if you don't book at the DVC busy times and are flexible with your dates, you can probably book at every resort at the 7-mo window.

However, if you just must stay at VWL at Christmas, BCV/BWV during the F&W festival, or want a BWV Std view or GV at a particular resort, then the 11-mon booking window the home resort gives you is a good thing to have.

I have points at AKV, VWL, BWV, and BCV. I can't combine my points, but I can use my BCV points at the 11-mo window to book there during the F&W festival, I can use my VWL points at the 11-mo window to book there during Christmas, etc.

Some folks do likewise and purchase points at multiple resorts; others just buy more points at their home resort.

You can only book as many points as you have at that particular resort at the 11 month window. Say you have 150 points at SSR, and 50 points at VWL, you can only book 50 points worth at VWL at the 11 month window. At the 7 month window, you could book 200 points wherever you want. Hope that helps! :thumbsup2

We became recent DVC members. Buying points at the resorts you want to stay at is a must. Booking at 7 months is getting more and more difficult. Disney does a good job of taking slow periods and making them busy. Think how slow it must have been before Food & Wine.

The only way to get around not owning additional 11 month proprieties is if you only want to stay at one resort and you don't care what kind of room you get and when you get it.

We like to stay at VWL for Christmas or Thanksgiving, so we really need the 11 month advantage there. We have a 100 point contract that we bank and/or borrow up to 300 points at one time to make our one week reservation at 11 months. The majority of our points are at OKW, so we either use them to stay at OKW or SSR or add to our BCV or VWL stays if we need the extra nights.

I think some people just catch "add-on-itis." They'd probably do fine with all their points at one resort - maybe the one that its most important for them to stay at regularly, but they take a certain pride in ownership with each resort owned.

My wife and I originally purchased BCV, then added on there, then stayed there at Xmas in '04. We were showing my sister, who visited for a few days, the various Disney resorts, as she had never been to WDW. When we saw VWL decorated for Xmas, we were stricken. It was not until the following June, however, that I decided to call our guide about a VWL add-on. Of course he "found" some available points, and we became a two-resort couple.
We call day-by-day for a studio during Xmas and the week after, although it is probably not necessary.

I bought HH points because it is extremely difficult to stay at HH during the summer without the 11 month advantage. I also bought BCV because I wanted an on-site Disney DVC, and BCV is a smaller resort that fills up quickly at our preferred times. I just added AKV points because I wanted to be an owner there, too!!!

I don't mind waiting until the 7 month mark and combining my points for most of our stays, but I wanted to make sure I had the option of getting a hard-to-make reservation at 11 months if I really wanted it. I think I have the best of all worlds - well, except that I want some VWL points....
