Why Buy a DSLR?

Just want to thank everyone for their input.. I am now the PROUD OWNER of a Brand new Nikon D5000 DSLR!!! :cool1::banana::woohoo::yay:

Can't wait to start learning how to USE IT now :lmao:

Thanks again.. look for me all around these boards.. we have our big trip coming up in May.. and I want to be able to take the best pictures possible!!!

Thanks Joe! I plan on doing that, and possibly getting some books on the subject as well!

This is kind of the way it worked with me when I first got my dSLR:

#1 - Read the manual (didn't understand half of it).
#2 - Go out and practice.
#3 - Read the manual again (makes a little more sense, but I understand what does what - not sure why though).
#4 - Go out and practice some more.
#5 - Read Understanding Exposure
#6 - Go out and practice.
#7 - Read Understanding Exposure again (oh yeah, now I understand why it does what).
#8 - Go out and practice again.
#9 - Keep practicing (but keep the manual close).
#10 - Take my dSLR to Disneyland and take a photo that will win one of these darn DISboards weekly photo contests (not yet, but it could happen).
#11 - Repeat.

Wow! You went from knowing *zero* about dSLRs to a full-fledged dSLR owner in just 2 days! :thumbsup2 At this rate, you'll be a professional photographer in about a week!!!

Anyway, congratulations on your purchase. Now go out there and shoot, shoot, shoot! :)

Sounds like solid advice!!! I'll try my best!!

While I have this book, you may want to checkout the newer "Bryan Peterson's Understanding Photography Field Guide: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera", which contains most of the same material but is updated (2009).

Thanks Mike!
