Why buy 2 DVC resorts?

We are thinking of buying into DVC. We are looking at either BWV (resale) or BLT (resale or thru Disney depending on potential upcoming incentives). We have 3 kids (18, 15, and 14) and (for now) need at least a 2 bedroom. I notice that many people buy into a certain location - but then go on to buy numerous smaller contracts for other locations. Why?

If I buy a 200 point contract for BWV, why would I then buy a 25 point contract for BLT? It's not like I can get a room at BLT for 25 points in the 11 month window. Wouldn't it make more sense to pour all my $$ into one contract at BWV and hope I could get lucky at the 7 month window at BLT (or visa versa)?.. What good does a 25 point contract do for you?

I suppose if I won the lottery, I could buy 2 "full point" contracts (for us -around 180 points) to both locations and we could stay wherever we wanted whenever...

I'm just not sure how the "small point" contract offers any advantage.... In any case - we are hoping to work out the numbers and come on board. Love these DIS boards. An absolute wealth of info - from people who absolutely understand the Disney "mystique"!

If you buy a 100 point contract at BWV(resale). Then add on a 100 point contract at BLT. You could bank your points and have 200 points to use at each resort every other year. That way you can book at two places at 11 months:thumbsup2

You need to buy where you love to stay.

Some folks don't fully understand how the DVC works and they bought a smaller contract at a second resort assuming that their total points from all contracts could be used at 11 months.

We own at 5 resorts but we have enough points to book at least a full week at each.

I bought just 50 pts at BLT, but already had 200 at BWV. Why? My dh doesn't enjoy going to WDW nearly as much as I do, but he loves BLT...and that was with only seeing photos of it. So, I figured I would book there every other year..that made him very happy. We get to book at 11 months out that way.
I doubt I would buy a smaller contract at any other resort though.

I think that a lot of people who already owned at another resort bought a small BLT (or AKV for that matter) contract "just because." Sure, 25 points doesn't really get you much, but with the ability to bank/borrow, you could get about 5 nights in a studio during value season every three years. Since I like longer vacations and I hate the thought of a split stay, 5 nights wouldn't do it for me, but some folks love resort hopping, so 5 nights would be perfect for them. Either way, good luck with your decision - - hopefully, we'll be welcoming you home in no time. :goodvibes

we own two 270 contracts. We are disney nuts and like to vacation there or visit family. plus when DH retires we can drive in 1 day from our new local.

We bought 270 to get one full week at a resort in a 2BR when we bought now it doesn't actually work that way so we may eventually buy another 25 points at each of our home resorts.

We originally bought AKV and love it.

Back in August we went to the Doorway to Dreams even the promotion for BLT was too good to pass up so we walked away with a second contract.

We like the option of booking 11 months at our home resorts. We currently have a August and January 11 trip at BLT scheduled both in 2BR and we will go next August to AKV.

Actually, for the most part I am in agreement with the OP. We have two contracts at the same resort for that very reasy. We have an original 230 point contract at OKW as well as a 150 point add-on there. But we did add on a 69 point contract at AKV when that opened so we could have an occational (every 3rd year) stay there. As it turns out, we have ended up using some of our OKW points to stay at AKV switching at the 7 month window, but now that the newness has worn off of AKV for us, we are likely going to stick to our original plan. We LOVE OKW, and when we stay at other DVC resorts, we miss OKW, so we have our points in the right place for our needs.

We bought a 150 point contract at BWV about 5 years ago. We wound up going a lot with relatives so we generally needed to borrow from future years to book a 2BR. This past year we decided to add on but couldn't decide where. We thought another 100 points at BWV would get us a 2BR every year but we stayed at BLT recently and loved it.

In the end we decided to buy a 160 point contract at BLT. We figure we'll bank one contract every year and have the full 300 to use every other year. We'll probably have points left over as it stands now. Still, we wanted to own at BLT so we went with a 2nd contract.

We do just what others are saying. Bought at BWV originally because we love it there. When BLT opened, bought there to stay on the monorail/walk to MK. We have enough BWV to stay there every year in a 1 bedroom for 1 week, but for BLT only enough to stay there every year in a 1 bedroom for 5 days. So, we can do 5 nite stays, split stays, or bank/borrow and alternate between locations every year. We tend to view our BLT points as our "premium" points, for use only at BLT and to be spent very carefully, since they were so much more expensive. Our BWV points we're less careful with - DSister will be staying at VGC with her family for 5 nites in April using our extra BWV points (with a baby on the way, we can't squeeze in the 2nd trip this year, so are instead sharing the points with family - we could have banked, but honestly feel we have enough points that I'd rather they get used and enjoyed by family).
