Why are the new Mickey Mouse shorts so bad?

In my opinion, they are bad because they lack a good bad guy. I haven't seen Pete in one of them.

Okay, so this is super odd. I just did a podcast episode about this. You can listen to it here: http://www.thedisneymoviereview.com/71

My highly controversial view is that Mickey should be in the public domain. Gasp, I know. There is no symbol more associated with a company than Mickey is with Disney. But I honestly think it would lead to better content and actually help Disney stand out more. Like, if you think about Peter Pan, that content is in the Public domain. you or I could make a play or a movie based on that without being sued or anything. But everyone would compare what we did to the Disney version because Disney made the definitive version of Peter Pan. I think it's the same thing with Mickey, but they're a little lazy with him sometimes. They know the fans love him so they don't have to try as hard as they do with an unknown character. I think if Mickey was in the public domain and other people were pushing the envelope with him, Disney would have to be on their A-game all the time. It would lead to such great content for fans.

I don't care for them. Disney is more about fast and cheap these days than plot and artistry.

I really can't agree with this. Just becasue these shorts aren't to your liking, I would say Disney as a whole is at a creative high, rather than a low. Look at their movie output? There's nothing fast or cheap about Zootopia or Frozen or Wreck-It Ralph. Most of the shows they do for TV are also very beautifully animated and/or creatively driven (Star Wars: Rebels, Gavity Falls, even Sophia looks gorgeous).

These shorts were intended to evoke a very particular style, and while it's certainly not my favorite version of Mickey and the gang, I wouldn't say it was picked because it was cheap. If you want to see an extremely good Mickey short, check out "Get a Horse" in 3D if possible.

BrianL: I was only referring to the Mickey shorts. I agree with your post that the vast majority of Disney animation is very artistic and well done. That is what makes the Mickey shorts look like cheap filler. The talent is there to do better when you compare them to say the fairies shorts.

I personally disagree. For the first time in decades the Mickey Mouse shorts are actually funny. It's a shame they are not doing them with classic animation, but they are quite funny.

Pete is in them. They are hilarious! My 4 year old can't get enough of them and they crack us up. Maybe you should give them another chance. We didn't like them at first either. :yay:
