Why are the Disneyland boards here on DIS so strangely organized?

I'm sure I'm not the only to have noticed so what gives? For those who are curious as to what I am talking about, here are a couple of examples:
  • The primary Disneyland (California) board, on any given day, has multiple posts that have nothing to do with Disneyland. Discussions regarding hotels, restaurants outside of the resort and other non-DLR attractions are commonplace.
  • An even odder phenomenon is that we get the occasional post that is extremely topical to Disneyland (photo threads, attraction discussion threads, etc.) and those are sometimes migrated to the community board.
Right now it seems as though the Disneyland (California) board is primarily planning content and everything else is eligible to be moved into Community depending on the moderator's opinion of a given thread. It's almost as though our little section of the DIS boards was an afterthought. How difficult would it be to create a Planning board for the posts that pertain to planning (hotels, transportation, non-DLR attractions, etc.), change the Community board to be moderated around non-DLR topics (family stuff, movies, whatever) and a primary Disneyland board devoted to all things Disneyland Resort? It seems like those simple changes would make the moderator's job easier in the long run as well with a little clearer delineation between boards.

Those are my observations anyway. I was also curious if there was some history here on this board that explains how they wound up this way???

I must be used to it because I can't seem to get used to any other board.:rotfl:

I've noticed the same thing, but even after only being here a short while (soooo glad I found DISboards), I think I'm used to it as well :)

I love that it is all integrated as it is a one stop shop for planning. There is so much amazing information here and I guess you are right, most of the threads are about planning and in that you learn all about the resort. I do not see the problem :confused3

:thumbsup2 I agree! It seems it us up to the moderator where things go. It is rather confusing to have Disneyland pictures on the same forum section as the what you had for dinner last night threads. I do find the DCL threads easier to read than the Disneyland threads. I am guessing a lot of it has to do with computer stuff that I am clueless to.

My guess is that this section probably did start out as just an afterthought as it's sooooo far down the list of sections that it even comes after the international Disney resorts. And so there were relatively few postings that it didn't wasn't worth the trouble to organize the topics into neat sections. However the traffic seems to have really picked up recently so maybe it might be time to look into reorganizing things.

The only what you had for dinner type threads I see on this board are regarding what you have for dinner in the park, not in general.

The Disneyland Boards used to be so slow that we just had one board for everything. As more and more people started posting and becoming more 'chatty' we created the Community Board.

The Disneyland Board is basically for topics relating to the Disneyland Resort. Most of those threads are for planning, some not. However, those that are not that we think will help people when planning are left on this board. Example, the dinnner thread is left on this board because many people look into dining options and like to look at pictures. The dinner thread helps with that.

The danger in having too many boards is that people will still post on the main board, causing us to have to move them, and people tend not to visit the other boards, and so they may not get that much traffic - examples being our So Cal board, other themepark board, etc. So, the DL boards are not really an afterthought, they are currently laid out the way we think will best serve the folks here.

Thanks for your recommendations, though. We'll take them into consideration. :)

Alternatively, you could consolidate down to Disneyland and Disneyland Planning. The existing Disneyland Community Board is essentially serving in the role of a general Disneyland board while the Disneyland (California) board is primarily planning.

Regardless, thanks for the clarification as I thought the design somewhat odd ever since I first started browsing.

I don't see a real problem with it, as long as they lead in and around somewhere with DL. It really does not matter that other folks toss in other subjects, i guess i could see where it might bug others but,i really don't se it being a big issue, more things to read:cool1:

The DL boards have never been as busy as the WDW boards are. You used to post on the DL boards (just a couple of years ago) and your post would sit unanswered for a day or dayS. It also would not end up on the next page for quite awhile.

The activity picked up as Carland was being built and anticipated and it has really increased since CL opened. More people are coming on the DL board from the WDW boards or complete newbies.

I'm taking a guess that after a few of years of CL being opened, plus in 2014 when all of WDW Fantasyland is completed, that it may go back to less posts on the DL boards as some WDW people will have tried out DL and will be ready to go back to the new things at WDW.

It's much more laid back on the DL boards. And dare I say it - you never have to put on your "flame retardant" suit on the DL boards whereas people often start their posts on the WDW boards saying "I know I'll get flamed for this" or "Don't flame me, but..." Threads are often shut down on the WDW boards. I never saw discussions about pool hopping on the DL boards until just this past week and it didn't get heated.

Enjoy the west coast/CA sunshine/kool-aid and feel yourself relax. :)

I posted about my first trip to Land after having gone to World multiple times, and I posted both on here and on the WDW section, and the mods on the WDW section moved it somewhere. I have no idea why as the whole thing was about taking the plunge to go to Cali and the differences between the two, and that I hoped I helped any WDW vets trying to decide whether or not to switch coasts!

I like the Disneyland Board. I think that it's great. I don't remember exactly how it was back in 2005, when I made my first trip to Disneyland. I just remember that I really didn't get very much needed help back then, so I ended up becoming a very frequent poster on another site. Somehow it seems so much better now. Everyone is so helpful and friendly. With many Disneyland vacations behind me now, I am now an every day visitor to this site. I enjoy sharing, and learning, and hopefully contributing as I plan my most recent trip, or help someone else plan there's.

Isn't that the truth? The DLR boards is a smaller community, and dare I say, gentler group. I like the one stop shop approach to this board. :goodvibes

Argento, may I ask where you got your really cool DVC siggy?

I don't know, but I love it!

I have a much tougher time trying to look through the huge mess of WDW stuff, or other sites. This is nice and easy for me. One of the reasons I love being on here!

Well the Disneyland (main) board is for planning a trip, per its description. So I guess they feel that any "general" Disneyland talk would be long on the Community Board.
