Why are promo codes more?

Every promotional code that I have checked for rental cars comes out to be more than with out a code. Why do they even bother? Some of the "discounts" cost 50 dollars more for a week.
Tara

I've been reading posts of people saving money with the codes, but I've been trying too and found the "special" discounted code to be more than the regular rate. I've been checking Alamo every week and my rental has dropped each week so I modify my reservations. GOOD LUCK! :moped:

I think that when ou are booking online you are getting an internet rate which appears to be the same as most standard discount you can find.

I plugged in codes with the usual discounts ou find floating about and also left all the codes/ids blank and have consistently come up with the same numbers.

The only thing that really saved money was using a coupon for a free upgrade... went from Full size to SUV for 220.76 for 9 days

Discount code savings frequently are based on discounts off of the full price rental rate, but even with the savings are often more than the sale rental prices. I agree with the earlier poster that the upgrade codes are a good deal, since you can book a class smaller than you want/need at the sale price for that size vs. the one you'll get. Some offers also are for free days and things like that, so those typically will result in savings off of sale rates too.
