Why are people so inconsiderate??

As a teacher, I see many children throwing used Kleenex, gum, food, and paper on the ground in a classroom. Whenever I catch a child dropping anything, I make them pick it up and copy the school behaviour policy (a section on littering is included). I have even had parents challenge me because "their taxes pay for the custodians." If children try to get away with these actions in school - what do you think these children get away with a home? What bothers me the most are the parents who will defend their children for littering! These are probably the same people who litter in the WDW parks.

How about the woman I saw at Pop Century last year throw her lit cigarrette down on the ground by the pool when I'm sure there was an ashtray not to far from her...some people are just morons!

The more that I read of this thread, the more disgusted I get. I notice this a lot too (within the parks and out of them). At the movies, parks, WDW, throwing stuff out of car windows, etc. People are just so lazy. What happened to worrying about the environment and just being plain "considerate". It makes me re-think having children. Why would I want my kids to grow up in such a self-absorbed, un-caring world (well with the exception of most of us DISers who are concerned with cleanliness and being helpful/considerate). :confused3

I will be working for Disney next month...I am doing something in the Food & Beverage dept...I will make sure to either keep an eye out on garbage or let the one in charge of trash to keep an eye out for trash...we can't have a trashy Disney now can we... ;)

I think I would become unglued if a parent questioned me about expecting a child to pick up their own trash. That's just sad to give a child the idea that they shouldn't even make the effort to walk to the trashcan b/c someone else will always clean up after you. This is a pet peeve of mine. I won't even let my class leave for their next class as long as there's paper on the floor.

I saw an eighth grader break a popcicle stick and throw it on the ground one day when I had bus duty. I tried the old "I think you dropped something". He looked at me and said, "No, I didn't" (as in, no, I did it on purpose), so I tried a different tactic. I told him that leaving trash on our campus made it look bad, so to please pick it up. He replied that he thought it looked nice. :headache: I finally gave him the "teacher look" and said, "I won't ask again." He stood there a couple of seconds more and finally picked it up and threw it away. Not only a litterer, but a disrespectful, rude litterer.

:earseek: The common respect for where you are and other people seems to be a thing of the past and too many people feel a sense of "entitlement" to do what they want, when they want with no regard to anyone or anything else.

You took the words right out of my mouth. And it does not end here. Look what lessons kids are learning. It is being perpetuated.

It makes me sad and mad. :sad2:

I live in a beach town, and what I see during the tourist season (May-Sept.) is enough to make you crazy. The trash and junk left on the beach and boardwalk is horrendous. I've always wanted to walk around asking these people, "what were you thinking when you did that?". Seriously, what could the thought process possibly be, that would bring someone to the decision to blatantly do this?
